Shanghai, the largest city in China and the most populous in the world. Shanghai was hosting a World Fair, we had seen advertisements in the other cities we had visited and were far more numerous here. We were told it was geared for Chinese tourists who have little chance to travel abroad and also the lines just to buy tickets and get in could take hours so we had no intentions of trying to visit. Because of the Expo, most hotels were booked so we stayed in one further away but since it wasn't far from a subway stop it didn't take too long to get into town.
After lunch we figured out the subway system (you had to pay more the longer you traveled, a whopping 4 Yuan each one way) we got off the closest to what I could tell was near the river and a short walk to the area known as The Bund. The Bund is an area along the Huangpu River with historical buildings built by colonial powers at the end of the 19th century. We bought tickets (expensive) for the Pedestrian Transit Tunnel under the river to see the sights from Pudong Park. The
tunnel in which the tunnel took us under was a cheesy light and video show (see YouTube video). We walked up to the Oriental Pearl Tower and decided to not go up, the lines were long (due to the Expo) and the prices seemed expensive at the time.
We couldn't catch a taxi (all were full, again due to the Expo) so we walked several kilometers south to Old Town and visited the Yu Gardens and Bazaar (the gardens had already closed by 4:30). After that we tried to catch a boat ride on the river but for some reason we couldn't get tickets, they were "sold out" despite seeing dozens of different boats. It did rain on us for a short time but we lucked out and it cleared up giving us time to walk along the river and enjoy the night lights. After dinner we caught the subway back to the hotel. The hotel had laundry so we knocked that out before our flight the next day to Japan.
