Dodging motorcycles, taxis, buses, scooter, bicycles, tricycles, carts and just about anything else with wheels both on and off the sidewalk is the first thing one has to learn in Shanghai if they wish to survive. Pedestrians are at the very bottom of the getting around totem pole and are expected to behave as such or suffer the consequences.
