Hi All, My six week tour around southern China finishes, quite fittingly, with a visit to 27 The Bund the old offices of Jardine, Matherson & Co's. Not only were Jardine's the first to buy land on Hong Kong Island but also here on The Bund. All from the "brown mud". It's little wonder that China followed the political path that she did. Foreign interference in China couldn't carry on and it wasn't until after WWII that the Maoist government finally eradicated the scourge of opium. I've had a fantastic time and I've done and seen some once in a lifetime things. Enjoy the photos Jah Bless... read more

No idea of location of Cruise terminal in Shanghai (smell high). Queen Mary Day 16 The foghorn continued all night at roughly two minute intervals. We were supposed to enter the channel to Shanghai at 2.00 a.m., while we were asleep, however the Shanghai Harbour Master closed the port to all shipping because of zero visibility. The Captain advised us that we anchored in a designated place and awaited further orders from the Harbour Master. At around 6.00 a.m. we were given the okay to raise anchor and we started up the river at about 8.00 a.m. The trip up the river to the port was four (4) hours and we eventually docked at around 12.15 p.m. We had a tour booked for 9.30 a.m. as had probably 1500 guests. Some were doing the bullet train, ... read more

Yu Garden and Old Town Bazaar I've never been so happy to have a day off every. It's been a long academic week of PPT watching and being spoken too about what Disney english is all about. On friday we had to produce a mock lesson, mine was about farm animals so of course I dug out the cow boy hat from the props cupboard. My only whinge is that Disney say that Modelling is really important but expected us to produce a mock lesson without actually showing/modelling how the lesson should be done. But anyway I had a good laugh with my LP (learning partner Jojo) who was a part of the training team, we got some good feedback and our observer actually finally gave us some teaching ideas to help with the lessons.. It ... read more

A before breakfast run on one of the many machines on the 21stfloor treats us to great city views, even though the air is still smoggy. The pool looks spectacular: it has glass sides that look straight out to the City. The steps leading up to the gym and pool levels are also made of glass, which is a bit unnerving. We have a better look out our room window this morning , to find that the floor-to-ceiling windows project out, giving an almost direct view straight down. Just think how much fun that would be in an earthquake! Breakfast dishes up a few more treats. This time we get banana and fruit smoothies, milk is served in bottles (harkening us back to NZ milk bottle delivery times), and the boys track down chocolate milk. Plus ... read more

We all had a much needed sleep in this morning. Our room got up at 10.30. Laura, Jason and I went out for a walk to find somewhere for breakfast. We found a shop that was a cafe and bakery. We all managed to find something we wanted. I had pizza and a peanut butter sandwich! Followed by the best latte ever. The only thing that was really weird was that all the foods we picked were sugar coated! After breakfast we went back to the hostel to meet with Jessie our new guide. Only 6 of us: Laura, Jason, Rob, Coralee, Adam and I, ended up going with her. We realised by the end of the day that having a smaller group was intact really beneficial. It was much more relaxed. We set off for ... read more

I got up at around seven ish this morning. Breakfast is at eight, but I wanted to get my. Laundry washed early so that it dries before leaving. We are expecting another 40 degrees again today so that shouldn't be a problem. Breakfast was good today. We had toast, cold boiled eggs, peanut butter, jam, water melon and some cold turnip stuff. Everyone tucked in! It was a bit of a treat having peanut butter and jam! 12 of the group went for a wall after breakfast. We knew it was only going to be a short one due to the heat, but to be honest, I felt like I just needed a bit of down time after all the ravelling yesterday. Laura, Zoe, Louisa, Mel and Abbie also gave themselves the morning off. We all ... read more

Well, that was the well thought out plan! We got a taxi, went and picked Neil's dad up, and off we wen to the of place. I couldn't bloody believe it..... when I opened the iPad ....... It was working fine ! I felt a not stupid, but Neil had seen it before so he explained. But with it being ok, there as nothing they could do. We got a return taxi and went back to the hostel. On returning, I went to turn it on....the screen had gone black again..... Gutted.... Again! I have now given up on it ! By lunchtime people ... read more

The flight from Xi‘an was fairly uneventful and we were soon on the metro line from Pudong airport into town. A short while later and the most bizarre stop arrives, we all have to cross from our train into one that arrives on the other platform and vice versa. The metro train we were now on continues into town while the one we’ve left heads back to the airport. A bit of reading of the signage in the train reveals that this isn’t always the case and between certain times the train does go all the way. After a short walk from the subway we arrived at our hotel, it was advertised as a boutique hotel, and the impressive reception and small entrance lane didn’t disappoint us. We checked into our large room that had all ... read more
