July 9th- We made it to Shanghai, China. We had breakfast at the airport and I had smoked salmon, YUM! Everyone is very tired. We took a bus to the New Harbor Apt Hotel. These apartments are spectacular, much better than Rome. Sam and I are sharing an apt together. I have two double beds to myself. We are also the only apt with a washing machine. The view outside our apt is fantastic. It reminds me of New York City only filled with Asian people. We walked to a little soup shop down the street and created our own soups. Our meal was $1 US dollar total. Everything is so cheap here. We had a walking tour of the city and visited peoples square, the subway and Nanjing Rd. Today is my father’s birthday but also Matt Hibbards who is in the program. We all headed out to a restaurant and realized how hard the language barrier could be. We were trying to order food without having pictures to look at and having no idea what to get. We ended up with chickens with the heads still on them, full fish with heads on them etc. It was fun to
experiment but also interesting.
July 10th- Today was our first visit to the fabric market, might be the greatest trip of the summer so far. It is a huge three level building with anything you could ever want. You bargain down prices and they make custom fit clothing for dirt cheap. Today I just ended up with a golden silk robe which is gorgeous. After the fabric market we had lunch. In my soup there was a BUG. I tried to explain to them what had happened but again the language barrier got in the way. The rest of the day was spent jet legged.
July 11th- Classes began today. First we took a tour of our school, Fundan University. I have never been on a more beautiful campus. It is the largest university in China and has the third largest University building in the world. They also had a mini model of the campus which I also enjoyed.
July 12th- We had a site visit to Kodak and SMIC. Both were wonderful visits. We got right on the shop floor in Kodak to see how they build their products. This was a great example of what
we are learning in class applied in a business setting. We stopped for lunch and got stuck in a down pour. I forgot what rain looked like because it never rained in Rome. SMIC was an interesting visit. We didn’t get to see the production but the presentation was very informative. They also had a mini model like Fudan. SMIC also built its own miniature town. They own their own apts, hospital, school etc. It’s amazing what they can offer their employees, great company to work for.
July 13th- Today we have a project work day. It’s weird not having to visit IBM. Finally we get a rest. Our group dynamics could be better but we are working through it. The more we dive into our IBM project the more we lose our focus.
July 15th- Chris and I did our first exploration of the city alone. We walked around peoples square and went to the top of the Marriot hotel. We look out over the city and it never ends. It keeps going and going. Chris and I also went to the Bund which is the water front of Shanghai. The water was very dirty but the
view was still spectacular. It’s hard to stay outside long because it is very hot and humid here.
