I took the subway, line 12, to Tilanqiao station. I came out of exit one, crossed the main road and headed left for about a minute or two. I could see a big sign pointing the way to the museum and I was pretty much on top of it. I bought my ticket at the ticket booth, 20 RMB for standard entry. There is another ticket for 45 RMB, which includes a coffee at the White House Tavern on one of the neighbouring streets, but seeing as I had recently just imbibed one, I didn't really fancy another. The ticket booth is just across from the entrance, so after getting my ticket I headed in. The museum is housed in the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue, which was established in 1907 and moved to the present location ... read more

I've been working in Shanghai for 1 month now. If i am not getting very far with the language... one sure shot of way of getting to know the Chinese people is to eat their food ! The language of food comes quite close to that of love! Its a necessity, we all need to eat, so why not? Some of these food explorations i did on my own. Struggling to explain what I want. Pointing at pictures or the displayed food.. The waiter telling me something in Chinese, me giving my best 'I don't know what u r talking about expression', followed by a meek smile ! always follow with a smile... Then of course they'll just give you what they think u want and show you how much it costs on a calculator.. Some ... read more

For most people the everyday workings of daily life can be very comforting. A metro or train journey before and after work only helps add to the certainty and routine. The train is going to stop at the same number of stations the same amount of time. There is bound to be the similar number of people in the train at a particular time. It's easy to get comfortable with these sort of things, one can expect them to happen every day. One can come to the point when one is no more worried about missing a stop . Either one knows exactly when to look up from their book. Or you've missed your stop enough times to know that its not a big deal and you can always take a train back to where you ... read more

The National holiday was approaching, and it was adjacent to the mid-autumn festival (for which I had already made mooncakes). This meant an eight-day holiday! Well, eight days in government speak, but in our more pragmatic way of thinking four days more off work than a normal week. Think of a weekend as a two-day holiday. (Double plus good?) The holiday was basically the first week of October, but to compensate, the last Saturday of September was a working day. Back in the office, however, it felt like the end of term at school, and being a Saturday, I was sure this would no ordinary highly productive start to the weekend. Lead protagonists of the tribe were organising a trip. If your classmates told you that the end of term disco was cancelled and instead they ... read more

Hi All, Another interesting day wandering around the streets of Shanghai. I walked from my hostel at Laoximen to Hongkou to visit the jewish ghetto. I'm finding China's involvement in WWII really interesting and there is a link between the synagogue here in Shanghai with the ones I'd already seen in Ha'erbin. Around 25,000 jews lives were saved by the Japanese and Chinese in the ghetto of Shanghai. Many jews tried to flee Nazi Germany after 'Kristalnacht' but nobody was willing to accept them apart from the Chinese. A Chinese and Japanese diplomat distributed visas to many jews so they could escape persecution. When Japan entered WWII the jews were classified at 'stateless' and a ghetto was set up in Hongkou district to house them. The area already had Chinese people living there and so living ... read more

Hi All, Well what an adventure and all to find a supermarket. Returning to a good hostel. I do like the Laoximen Hostel. A good mix of travellers. I thought we could take in Duolun Road, a collection of restored houses. It was where the interlectual set lived. The most famous being Lu Xun. The church was a sight to behold from the outside and a real let down inside. It felt like a tardis in reverse. A huge building outside and tiny inside. I was like a conference room. We then preceded to get lost trying to find a Carrefour supermarket. We walked what felt like for miles. I made it back to Shaoyang and Dany is safetly in Italy. Enjoy the few photos Jah bless... read more

Shanghai: My third trans-pacific flight (first 2 Australia) wasn’t any easier than the previous two, 15 hours of thumb twiddling and failed attempts to sleep at an airline deemed generous 70-degree incline. Exhausted, grimy, and uninspired we finally touch down in Shanghai and hop in a hotel shuttle for a one hour ride to the hotel for our 5 day "orientation" (I use that word loosely). Shanghai dwarfs any other major world city I had been to previously. It seemed like ¾ of the shuttle ride was through downtown. I don’t know where it ranks in terms of population density but it has to be near the top of the list, high-rise apartments as far as the eye can see. It was mostly cloudy, come to find out is just the everyday norm for most Chinese ... read more

Where to start…….most of you reading this either presently know me or at least knew me at some previous point in my youth. Incase you don’t and you just randomly stumble on this my name is Zac McClanahan and this is my first attempt (probably a miserable one) at any kind of blog. For those of you who don’t know me well, I am notthe type to sit in Starbucks, sip a latte and critique meaningless things just to have my name on the internet. I am currently living in Zhengzhou China teaching English at a college and traveling in my considerable free time. Friends and family from home have encouraged me to write about the places I go and the things I see, and mom probably just wants an easier way to keep tabs on ... read more
