Very few western tourists visit Yan'an (apart from the odd Dragoman truck). It is a centre for Mao museums and memorials. These are incredibly important for the Chinese who are educated to believe that hero was the equivalent of a Churchill. The revolutionary museum had only limited information in English. It covered the Sino-Japanese war and there were some similarities with our museums relating to the second world war. The communist government is extolled in the museum. This propaganda includes describing it as a "democratic"government. I tried to explain to our Chinese guide that democratic government involves elections and opposition parties.
