(Delayed blog) We took off from Baotou Erliban airport on the evening of january 1st on 'Lucky airlines', a flight that took us to Xi'an Xianyang airport in an hour and 20 minutes. Due to the late night arrival we (I traveled with a colleague from London) opted for a taxi into the city. He dropped us off at the bell tower where we checked into the hostel named after it. After dropping our bags we walked into the city where we found a hotpot and ate until we were stuffed, while having beers to cool our tongues down from the spices. We decided it would be best to check out Xi'an's nightlife since we were there and so we did. We soon found a club where ordering a drink seemed a long and arduous process and with having to spend a minimum of ¥200 we opted for accepting the drinks that were offered to us by the locals instead 😊
However, those same locals started getting a little too pesky for our liking so we moved on. Not much farther we found a club called muse, of which we have one of in Baotou as well. So we went
inside and partied there for a while. However, than it turned ugly...
To keep the story short... We might have taken a drink from a table that did not belong to us (in china, once you buy drinks, you 'rent' that table) so while we were dancing on the dance floor, 4 guards suddenly pulled us off and followed us out. While doing soMia few Chinese swear words might have come from my mouth, which weren't appreciated by the manager, who joined the group of, by then, 8 guards!!! On the stair. OUTSIDE the club, I told him to go fuck his ... And then got pepper sprayed. The guards ran after my friend, for a whole of 3 blocks outside the club where they beat him with truncheons!! As I recovered from the pepper spray, I walked into the direction they had gone, met guards, asked them the whereabouts of my friend and got a few hard hits from the same truncheons. I ran away from them and kept searching for my friend whom I never found. So I went back to the hotel, fell asleep, and woke up in a bloody bed when my friend was brought
in with help from the girls downstairs, also covered in blood. Apparently, the guards had caught up on him and beat him with truncheons.
The next morning we woke up in blood stained beds and decided it would be best to forget about the ordeal. That was a bit hard as especially my friend had gotten quite a rough beating. At the Xi'an tourist information centre they strongly advised us to report the matter to the police after which we spent all day doing just that. X-rays at the hospital, the police taking our stories and them promising us they'd call us after they had sorted things out with the club owner. Which, since this is China, of course never happened....
Just a little warning to everyone reading this: Be warned going out in Xi'an's nightlife; Guards apparently are outside the Chinese law and can treat whatever way they like, even outside the club premises!
We did end up going to the Terracotta Army on our last day though, after which we flew back to Baotou to get back to work. Well, I did anyway. My friend was in the hospital for two
weeks with pneumonia (!)

Great to have you back blogging...
it must have taken you two years to recover from the beating at the night club. I hope you've fully recovered by now! I also suffered while in Xian...but from the gout in my right foot. The next time I visited China, I had broken my ankle six weeks before the trip. So I also have painful, but self inflicted, memories.
