Wednesday 19 Oct. Still dark when we got up thanks to the change of clocks, but left hostel by 10.00 out of Kashgar and through Kargalik to the start of the 219 (photo opportunity). The land started very flat and the visibility got poor but the road was good. However we failed at the first checkpoint about 65 km in when it appeared we needed to register with the police as well as have all the necessary permits. This was because of a terrorist attack earlier in the year but neither our guide nor agent were aware of the requirement. So about turn to Kargalik where we arrived by 5.30 pm - after about an hour and a half the decision was made for us to stay in a hotel overnight. This area of China does ... read more

Hi All What a lovely place to stay for a day or two. A really relaxed feel to this town with quiet traffic, a first in our experience for a Chinese city, and pretty floral arrangements on the street corners. We stayed here a couple of nights just to break up the long journey to Xining. We visited the mosque, where were asked to sit in the shade and talk to the old men. We got as far as we could with our Chinese then a young man came and asked us the same questions again but in English. The mosque was very different to the ones we'd seen in Xinjiang. Gone is the heavy middle eastern feel, although there is a lot of arabic script on the walls, the old men asked if we could ... read more

Hi All, What a trip! Again 6 1/2 hours but what a view from the bus. On the plateau, with the most beautiful blue sky, it felt like we could almost touch the clouds. Really stunning. The scenery was a bit more varied today. After passing through the oil fields of HuaTuGou the road snaked its way for miles through a barren wilderness. Now and again we'd come across shepherds living in yurts and at one toilet stop there were even camels. We did have a little trouble finding a hotel that would accept foreigners, being close to Tibet doesn't help matters, but we did find the Golmud Mansions was the most reasonably priced. The other hotels asked for 550 and 1100 rmb a night. Just going to relax this evening and we'll venture out into ... read more

Note: Our photo upload capability seems to be blocked here in Qinghai. We will post these later when we can make it happen. In China, drivers blow their horns. They blow them to warn pedestrians, to signal to other vehicles, to send a warning as they speed through a town, and to part livestock. It is also a habit perhaps concurrent with the excitement of the recent arrival of cars in the mainstream. In 2009 we observed a driver cruising down a six lane highway in the middle of nowhere blowing his horn vigorously at the empty road. It can be irksome but the system is quite useful at times. In many towns, a broken horn could be deadly; we recently sat eating breakfast at a gas station and watched countless scooters cutting straight across a ... read more
