Ni Hao from Dalian! Today is Sunday so we got a bit of a sleep -in! It was quite rainy this morning but this afternoon turned out to be a beautiful day with comfortable temperatures in the mid-20s. We headed outside of the city today to visit Lushun, also known as Port Arthur. It is the location of Hill 203 the key objective point for both the Russians and Japanese in the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War. We climbed to the top and saw the Japanese memorial and could get an amazing view of the port wherein the Japanese would have landed. This part of the city has lots of boats in the harbor and there are lots of shipyards too. We also took a visit to the Victory Tower where the Chinese created a monument to thank ... read more

Ni Hao from Dalian, We arrived here late last night after a 6.5 hour bus ride from Shenyang through the pouring rain. Not to worry, we kept ourselves entertained with songs, games and conversation. Before we left Shenyang we went to the National Museum which features many cultural relics including jade, various stones, calligraphy and objects from Chinese rich past. We had a treat for lunch today at a Korean BBQ restaurant. I think that all the students have tried food this way before, but they really enjoyed it. We had beef, lamb, squid and egg plant as well as a myriad of different side dishes to accompany our meal. As we headed south on the Shenda Highway, apparently the first major expressway in China, built in 2002, we were bombarded by heavy rains. We made ... read more

Our first school year in China is finally drawing to a close. Term 4 has been very eventful. Dianne has really enjoyed her new job. Working in the same building as her replacement has allowed her to keep her finger on the pulse of a real operation while she does her head office functions. These involve the preparation of a lot of new course materials as well as many different exam papers for students planning to move on to Grade 10 as well as entering ESL from a variety of environments. Dianne has really got on well with her replacement, Wendy. Wendy has been a Canadian ESL teacher at the school a couple of years ago prior to moving to Wuhan with her husband Craig who was principal there. He has now moved back to Jinshitan ... read more

The last month has been a whirlwind of activity and paper. B.C teacher licenses, retirement, pensions, and VISA info was the first round. Then selling the house, arranging for storage, dealing with mail, finances, cards, computers, phones, vehicles, packing and sorting - you know the routine. Everytime you check off something from your list, 3 more things pop up. It has been invaluable to have Rick at home to be dealing with so many of the items on the list. We had a great garage sale where we got rid of a lot of unneeded items. Having the last hour with all items free really cleaned us out! Our house is looking pretty barren, though, as we continue to pack up pictures and knickknacks. Now the major decisions are what to take in our 2 suitcases! ... read more

The months since the spring holiday have been filled with visits, weekend trips, and surprising changes. My delightful parents came for a three week visit and toured me around Qingdao (home of the 2008 Olympic sailing port) and Dandong (directly on North Korea's shores); I partook in a glamourous photo shoot that lasted 10 hours without food and learned a model's life isn't actually as easy as it looks (photos to be added later this week); and I accepted a position as co-department head for English 10 in September (where I will be heading the boy's campus). My parents, if anything on their visit, fed me well. We ate every possible type of food available to us (which spanned from Chinese to Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Italian, and "Western"). Qingdao was a cool city with a very ... read more

The start of term 4 is upon us and the biggest news is not that I have finally been replaced and get to start my new job as a stay-at-home spouse. The big news is that Dianne has been named the ESL Systems Coordinator for the entire Maple Leaf Education System as of May 4th. I’ll turn the blog over to her so she can describe the new job: How do I describe my new job? Well, the job description is a “work in progress” as this is a totally new position for the company. Basically, I will oversee all the ESL programs, meet with the different ESL Directors from each school, plan Professional Development, rewrite the learning outcomes for the pre-Grade 10 ESL programs, redesign the ESL Placement tests and the Grade 10 Entry tests, ... read more

Mundanity? I feel as though it suits what the past couple of months have been since returning from holiday. I was sick with a lung infection for about 4 weeks (check out my exciting lung x-ray in the photos), and this weekend I was finally struck by a rather horrific stomach bug that has been plaguing our school. It was the first weekend I finally felt well enough to go out since my lung infection, so I was all dressed up, and headed by cab into Dalian, only to arrive at the bar where my friends were meeting to discover that there was no possible way I could keep my dinner down. So, head between my knees, I took the $20 cabride 40 minutes back home without ever exiting. Mundanity, indeed. There are a little less ... read more

Back from Canada a month ago, where does the time go? Well, for me it is same old, same old. Not all of our bags made it back so I had to take an unscheduled trip back to the airport to pick up the missing two cases. Luckily the principal was coming in about the same time so the school van was making a run to Dalian to pick him up as well as some school supplies at Metro. I got a ride to the airport and our major shopping centre too. Bonus! The downside was that on the way back to the school he mentioned that "we" were unable to get the replacement teacher we wanted so I would have to teach half time this term. And the term started the next day! The course ... read more

The five week break from school flew by, leaving me with a whirlwind of memories from the places I visited across Southeast Asia. I'll give a very condensed version of events, and let some of the pictures do the talking. We left Dalian on January 19th, and flew to Hangzhou, just outside of Shanghai. While we were really only there a few hours (discounting sleep), we managed to squeeze in a boatride across the picturesque (and famous) lake before heading out to the airport to catch our plane to Kuala Lumpur. I'd never travelled with a group of teachers before, and found the plane ride to be rather enjoyable as we ended up writing stories and games on paper which, while incredibly nerdy, helped to pass the time! After arriving in KL, our group disbanded, and ... read more

After a fun-filled four days in Hong Kong, we returned for three days of classes before the New Year’s break. We decided to be lower key this weekend and booked two nights in at the Kempinski hotel in downtown Dalian. Almost like booking a hotel in your own city but comparing downtown Dalian to Manjiatan is like comparing night and day. Classes were out at noon on New Year’s Eve so all the staff could attend the gala New Year’s party. It really isn’t a party, it’s a stage show featuring the staff in various song and dance numbers and the odd skit. It’s mostly in Chinese but still enjoyable. The enthusiasm and talent of “ordinary” staff members is incredible. After the show we rushed out to the school gates where our trusty driver Jack was ... read more
