Reflecting a long held desire to visit China my guide book dates back to 2007。 Stupidly I didn‘t think that much would have changed over the past three years 。 As a consequence there have been a number of occassions where I have led us on a wild goose chase to visit musuems which have closed or to eat in a restaurant which has been knocked down。 While having out of date information is frustrating it has led us to be less reliant on the word of the guidebook than we might otherwise have been, so much so the last week has been spent visiting places that aren’t even listed... This has resulted in; 1) once in a life time experiances such as sitting on a roof top in a village called Likeng watching the funeral ... read more

Wuyuan was voted as one of the most beautiful villages in China by the Chinese National Geography (CNG) because of the rapeseed fields and the architectural style of the local houses. Wuyuan is formerly under the administration of Hui Zhou which is now part of Anhui province. This explains the similarity of the village designs between Wuyuan and those villages around Huangshan. On the first day (or 7th day of the tour), we booked a taxi to go to Mt Shanqing, the world heritage site mountain and one of the most beautiful mountains (by CNG) which is 2 hours away. The spikes we brought at Mt Lu were put to use again as there were frozen sections of the footpaths. The cable car brought us to the top of the ridge to start the trekking. The ... read more

Mike, my coworker Laura, and myself took a trip to the countryside on Thursday. Although I was advised not to travel on National Day, the roads were not terribly busy. We got an early start and took a bus to Jingdezhen, the porcelan capital of China. From there we hopped on another bus to Wuyan. At the Wuyan bus station we were swarmed by a group of taxi drivers. The most intense foreign-money seeking I've ever experienced- significantly greater than anything I ever experienced in India (except perhaps for my first day in Kolkata). Luckily we had a "local" guide. Mike (who does not like to be called "ChinaMike" in China) negotiated a fair to the hamlet of Sixi Yancun. Unfortunately, we did not know that this scenic and historic place was fenced off and required ... read more

We're still here... so the blogging continues.... After having been away from the UK for over ten months we thought that we'd want to go home in early September in time for graduate recruitment and university intake time of year. But instead we've accepted a great job offer where we will remain based in Zibo but will do bits of work in lots of cities around China. We couldn't miss the opportunity to travel more whilst still getting home in time for Christmas, avoiding rainiy recession autumn in England. We finished at school a few weeks ago following final exam week and parent meeting week. Leaving the classes that we've taught for 24 weekends felt funny but we soon realised that children are fickle so we shouldn't get too emotional. We took all the staff out ... read more

A Lesson in How To Make the Best of a Bad Situation Wuyuan is a part of north-eastern Jiangxi province known for having a collection of relatively unadulterated and authentic Chinese villages. Only recently being discovered by tourists, the area promised a great deal of relaxing old world Chinese-ness so I added it to my agenda without much argument. However, I was still in a hurry to make my way north so I limited my stay to just one village. I thought that if I explored one place thoroughly, rather than six places half-heartedly, I might get an idea of what it was like to live in the old China. Arriving in the town of Likeng (Xiao Likeng for those who want to go there, I suspect the list will be short) on the back of ... read more
