Thursday: Nothing too exciting happened today. I had trouble with one of my classes. Very loud, one kid was talking a lot and being stupid...so I stared at him for about a minute and he sure stopped talking after that. It makes my job 100 times more difficult and stressful when I have a kid like that in my class. Went to do some groceries, got some movies (Spiderman 3, Transformers and something called Flashback...it's a German movie (in English)...horror/slasher type...it was half decent). Just relaxed the rest of the evening. Happy Birthday Grandma Abma! Friday: End of the week! yay! I had 4 classes, 3 in the AM and 1 in the PM. I thought I had class at 1:40pm like Ben...but I showed up and the teacher was like "next class". I looked at ... read more

Saturday: One of Ben's students dropped by at lunch. We played Guitar Hero and he's improving! Really sweet kid. We went out and got KFC for dinner and it was really good...much better than KFC in Canada. Way less greasy...we got chicken sandwich with a piece of chicken on the side and Pepsi. They serve dessert there too, so we each got a strawberry sundae which was also really good. We might get a bucket deal with mashed potatoes & gravy for Christmas dinner since we're going to be alone here. We also did some groceries, got some beer (Bud) and it was pretty cheap about $4.30 for 6 Canadian funds. We went home to drop everything off and then went to get some movies...some didn't work in the PS2 or VCD player so we had ... read more

Classes are still frustrating, more so when the school changes the afternoon schedule and doesn’t bother to call and let us know! I’m starting to think that they don’t really take care of their foreign teachers very well. I smiled at a teacher and he rolled his eyes at me! I don’t feel very wanted or appreciated here at all. My last class was an absolute disaster! The kids spoke pretty much no English and just mimicked me, ignored me and talked over me. I was so tempted to just walk out but I just kept my cool and tried my best to work my way around it. The key was supposed to be brought over so we can pick up the VCD player in the other apartment, but no body came or called us. We ... read more

I didn't have class until 2pm today but I had three classes in a row until 4:25pm. They all went great! My first class was very talkative and even asked me some questions about life in Canada and about myself. My second class was really sweet, a lot of them said I was beautiful and lovely which made me blush...they gave me a balloon at the end of class welcoming me to the school and area. My third class was also great, they even tried to find what my name is in Chinese. It was near the end of class so I'm not sure if they found what it was or not. They looked in a dictionary since my name also means glass :P Things are starting to improve, but I still miss home a lot..especially ... read more

Today was a better day for teaching! Only 1 of my classes I had a teacher sit in and he didn't have anything negative to say so it was just a relief! It's still really difficult since most of them don't understand much English at all...I don't know what it's going to be like next week when I teach grade 7! Hopefully I can get a USB flash disk and be able to make power point presentations with pictures, so they have some visuals to work off of. The kids are sweet though, when they introduce themselves a lot usually say "I want to be your friend" so I write my e-mail address on the board and I let them know if they want to practice their English just to e-mail me and I will write ... read more

We finally unpacked our clothes today, but for some reason I can’t put our suitcases away. I miss home a lot but I guess that’s understandable with everything that has been going on. I know I won’t forget this experience and I’m thankful I was able to do this especially with Ben…but something deep down inside of me wishes I would have just stayed home. Maybe once I start teaching on Monday my feelings will change. We also did some laundry, and it takes forever since the washing machine is so small. We’re getting used to it for sure though. We went over to the school and Ben got his schedule for the Senior High School but I’m going to be at the Junior High School for now which is right across the street from the ... read more

Today we woke up at 5am to get ready for our medical examination. We took our showers and were ready to leave by 7am. It took about one hour to get to Taizhou city from Xinghua city where we live. We got chest x-rays taken, blood work, ECG, eye vision tests and ultrasounds done just to make sure we’re healthy enough to work in the school. We then went for breakfast and had these bread/pastry things which you dip in soy milk, dumplings and a rice filled pastry thing. We’re slowly getting used to the different foods here and we’re getting really good at using chopsticks! After breakfast we drove back home and we pretty much slept the whole way back. When we got home, I saw that both my mom and dad were on MSN ... read more

We woke up around 5:20am and while we waited we were disgusted by the people spitting and making gross sounds...it's really different from Ottawa that's for sure. We were also amused by a guy who had a laugh like Beavis from Beavis and Butthead...we couldn't help but laugh! We arrived at 7:30am and were greeted by two guys from the school who then brought us to breakfast...I didn't each much again because I'm not used to "lunch/dinner" food in the morning. The ride to our apartment was long and boring. The area isn't what we expected it to look like at all. We were actually a little disappointed in it to be quite honest...along with our apartment which is quite dirty. We did cry a bit because its scary to be somewhere where you don't really ... read more

We woke up rather early since we went to bed around 7pm, we went for breakfast in the hotel and it's not typical breakfast food that we're used it's almost like lunch. It was rather good but we didn't fill up too much, our bodies are still getting used to the time and the new surroundings. Around noon we got picked up and brought over to the office of the guy who set us up with the school in Jiangsu. We got to meet 2 other English teachers who were really nice. We then got to go to the Silk Market which is a big store with pretty much everything you can think of there...it's crazy busy there and they're all trying to get you to buy from their place. I got suckered into buying a ... read more

Saturday: Didn't do much today, just took it easy. Rented some movies and just relaxed :) Sunday: We had the boy come over again (Erik) and his grandparents brought us a Christmas tree and some Beijing duck...it was a really nice gesture :) Now we have a tree, but it still doesn't feel like Christmas is in 2 days. It's going to be a hard Christmas this year, but next year we'll be back with our family. And I think it will make our time together more special.... read more
