Well, I cannot imagine a better place to be today than at this place. I left off in the previous blog that we were taking a series of buses and more cable cars and such to the other location of these spectacular formations. Again the views were undescribable. My jaw remained open, because every curve we went around new wonders showed itself either from the people or circumstances to the views. As we turned one corner I saw a whole bunch of sticks lined up in a row under an over hanging rock. They seemed to be holding up the rock, so I asked what it was about and was told that people put them there if the have back problems and this would help the back. So of course I found an old eaten corn ... read more

Did you see the movie Avatar. It was filmed here. This is a surprise for you. (And us) My bucket list item. Before this place gets really exploited, this is a must visit in China. It is a little hard to get to. There is a local airport that you can fly within China to Chang Sa, but not from HK. We opted for train as previously mentioned, and then a 5 hour car ride. We have to go back the same way. It sounds harder but it is actually less complicated because of where this place is located. There is a new highway built recently and actually it is a pleasant drive. To begin with the national park is a gem. Thank goodness it is under protection. The views are nothing like we've seen anywhere ... read more

Thur 21 / 10 Yesterday certainly us the WoW factor but today's return to other parts of the Zhangjiajie National Park has extended the appreciation of nature in all her beauty and the ability of the Chinese to make this accessible (at least to able body people of a basic fitness. Avatar (the movie) did demonstrate the ability of computer graphics to convey the storyline but it is this magnificent area that provided the scenery and backdrop We rose about 400m in a glass lift strapped to the vertical face of the rock pillars taking me way outside my comfort zone (I am allergic to heights) then tracked around the 'rooftop' pathways and lookouts that appeared to defy gravity by the way they hung on and over the cliff face Each lookout on the many hours ... read more

Wed 20/10 Wow! I'm not one for big statements and I am always reluctant to endorse something for others but today was simply and possibly the most impressive 18 hours I can recall From the morning walk along the 5+ km trail of the Zhangjiajie National Park, the afternoon cable car into the heavens atop the pillars of Avatar fame or the evening 'cultural' show set in a natural valley between two towering hills on a stage that extended possibly 50 to 100m radius from our one of maybe 5,000 seats. Wow! NDC 20/10... read more

Tues19/10 From an uninspiring room where the dirty brown carpet was badly stained and beds that had less bounce than a concrete slab we woke early to pack then to a equally less than inspiring breakfast - juice was a cordial, tea and coffee in short supply and glasses (from the juice bar) were used in lieu of the no supply of cups for the dregs of the tea pot. Great news was that Iggi's bags that missed the Changsha flight out of HKK finally caught up with us, but only retrievable after the Hotel manager started work at 7:30 The big decision at the start of the bus trip was if the rotation of seats meant clockwise / anti clockwise or down one side. All was resolved however tomorrow may demonstrate this was not a ... read more

1st October is National Day in China and we all get 7 days off so, despite dire warnings about not travelling on the equivalent of our Bank Holiday, I ventured on a long distance bus tour to Hunan province, escorted by my good friend Xu Fie and her husband ‘Alan’ and 3 of their friends. They all spoke some English so I had a great support network to manoeuvre me around and make sure I didn’t get left behind! It started with an epic 24 hours travelling south, including one hair-raising moment in the dark and inevitably heavy rain. We had taken a wrong turning and ended up on a route which might actually be a road by next year but at this point was more like rubble, and we all had to get off ... read more

The last day of our trip was the highlight and hustle. We managed to climb to the top of Tianmen Mountain. Hey, wait a minute, do not be confused with the the name of the mountain with Tiananmen Square, which is located in the capital of China, Beijing. Tianmen Mountain is a natural mountain in Zhangjiajie, and the reason it is special is that it has a natural hole in the middle of the mountain, looks like a gate to the heaven, hence its name Tianmen Mountain. Tian means Heaven, Men means gate. Well, it is no easy task to get to the top of the mountain and stand at the base of the gate. First of all, you need to be brave enough to take the highest cable car in China. Looking down from the ... read more

Next day on 29th Aug, we went back to the park again. Today we will visit the Yuanjiajie section of the park. First of all, we got back on the bus provided by the park, the so-called green car, it transferred us to the bus station for the mini train to visit the "picture corridor". Scenery along the ride was beautiful plus comments by the park authority, which gives you guidelines to the mountain to make you imagine the shape of the mountain into different familiar shapes, like three mountains look like three sisters, one big mountain and one small mountain look like a man with his dog. You will have to use your imagination very hard to outline the picture, otherwise, the mountain is still a regular mountain, nothing special. Interesting enough, the train stops ... read more

The next day on 28 Aug, we started our real trip at Zhangjiajie's national park. We took the cable car going up to the top of the mountain, then visited some sights and took lots of pictures. We thought that we were all very strong, so we insisted on going down from the mountain on our foot. However, we felt deadly pain on our knees and leg. We had not expected there were that many steps to go down. It felt nice and cool when the breeze come anyhow. In the afternoon, after we had lunch at a local restaurant, we started our journey again to walk along the Jinbian Stream, also called Golden Rope stream. Luckily enough, we spotted many monkeys looking at us begging for their lunch. We got some nice shots. Among the ... read more

At the end of Aug, I made my former boss to invite me on a trip to Zhangjiajie to enjoy the beautiful scenery there. I had a great time there not only because it is beautiful there, but also because I had a reunion with my friends. We took one hour evening flight from Xi'an to Zhangjiajie Lotus airport, sounds like a romantic airport, but it is a very small and basic airport. Upon arrival, we ate out in a local barbecue restaurant with cold beer till mid night. The name of the restaurant is called Xiang Ge La. We drank beer and barbecued there with pork and vegetables. I arrived there later than anybody else because I had to deal with my client, Lauren, who wanted to travel to Beijing from Shanghai from 27 Aug ... read more
