After a great night's sleep, I was ready to explore more of Shaoshan. First though, we needed breakfast. We headed to a small restaurant, not too far from our guesthouse. Eventhough, these small restaurants are allover China, I felt like I was in Southeast Asia. It must have been a combination of the heat, humidity, and the fact I was on holiday. The place did a variety of noodle soups and other breakfast items. I opted for the fatty pork noodle soup. I was hoping that the fatty pork would be like the pork in Hong Shao Rou, however the pork in thr dish had zero fat on it. I couldn't be disappointed though as it was really good. I was sweating by the time I had finished it, which wasn't a pretty sight. We made ... read more

A long train ride from Beijing deposited us in Shaoshan in the late afternoon. We walked out of the train station and straight into the rain. We called a taxi to take us to our guesthouse. However, there was a problem as he didn't have the right number plate to enter the village (only residents can enter for free, I guess), so he dropped us close by and the guesthouse owner came and picked us up for the final leg. The small village we were staying in was cute and quiet, such a contrast to Beijing. We were the first ever foreigners to stay at the guesthouse and they'd roped in their eldest daughter to translate. She was so sweet and had excellent English. We were staying at the Mao Jiaxuan Chong Hotel (毛家韶山冲饭店), which was ... read more

Hi All, I know I've been before but this time I stayed in Xiangtan and didn't just go for the day. Xiangtan as a city is nothing remarkable but it is a great place to set up base camp to visit the former homes of the Communist party's founding fathers. So first on the list, the big one Mao ZeDong. It's remarkable how this man geld, and to some extent still does, such a power over the Chinese people. The young and old come to lay wreaths and say prayers in front of the statue in Mao Zedong square. The museum is full of Mao's possessions. Amazing that he had a huge library of books, smoked continuously, drank and ate only the best, the way his trousers waistline grew over the years being testament to swaths, ... read more

Hi All, We've been trying to get to Shaoshan for quite a while. I would really like to see all the home towns of the old communist leaders around Changsha. That was going to be our plan but, as is usual in China, we underestimated just how long it would take us to get there. We left Shaoyang at around 9 am and arrived in Xiangtan at lunchtime. After a spot of lunch we then travelled onto Shaoshan, we took a taxi 200 rmb but there is a bus from the west bus station we found out later which cost 15rmb, which took another hour. So it was around 2 o'clock when we finally got there. We had about 45 minutes in the square and visited Mao's home and then we had to go back to ... read more
