So our idling about came to an abrupt halt as we had to go to work. We were collected by taxi, which was just as well as the addresses are not easy to find and are usually part of a huge building. Finding the right entrance is a challenge. We got there early and were taken for a coffee in Starbucks, which was a nice start. We walked in like members of the Royal family, the staff all clapped. Oh dear! But the little children were the cutest ever and so polite. Lunch was a takeaway, Chinese food, but not as WE know it. Really interesting although we weren’t too hungry and declined dinner at the end of the day due to exhaustion and needing some down time. The worst part of the experience is the ... read more

Yesterday my connecting flight to Zhengzhou on Air China was disappointingly over an hour late departing, meaning that I finally arrived at the hotel at 1am after 27 hours of travelling and not being sure I was going to love it here. It was easy at Zhengzhou airport. The taxi rank was well organised. I showed the queue guy the hotel address in Chinese and he gave me a meaningless bit of paper. The taxi driver grunted at it and put something into his phone and off we went into the pitch black, no landmarks at all. I didn’t have a clue how long it would take except that Leslie, my buddy, had messaged to say his fare was 72RMB. I asked for a receipt and the driver flapped his hand at the meter. By this ... read more

Ok, sooooooo I made some mistakes on my last post. SEEE I’m not very good at this L So, on Friday we went to the museum and the mall, Saturday is when we went to Luoyang(洛阳) where the shaolin temple and temple of heaven where located. OK Now that I got that back in order, not I can talk about Karaoke and some other stuff….. I’m a little behind. On Sunday, we gathered as many of us (UTA students and tutors) and headed to karaoke, except they call it KTV here in China. All together it was like 12 of us in the room, good thing the room was big if not we would have not fit at all. It was so much fun, I of course was the first one to sing and not because ... read more

The priorities here are sometimes every so slightly askew. Sam's left foot is quite bulbous and his shoes tend to irritate him. He had a tendency to kick his left shoe off at every opportunity, so I switched to warm, woolly socks, but he still kicks off the sock from his left foot. I am frequently accosted by people in the street for "allowing" Sammy to have a bare foot in early spring. The best example of this was a woman who vociferously berated me from a scooter stopped at the lights, while her unhelmeted, unrestrained children dangled precariously at all angles... because, colds are serious, people!... read more

It’s so fantastic that we were able to be with Sammy for his third birthday on the 19th of March. Kym invited her students to join us. They all ensured that Sammy was the belle of the ball, but he only had eyes for the cream on his cake, which quickly sent him into a diabetic coma, which enabled the girls to par-tay. Giggity!... read more

Caroline Well, we made it! And on the scheduled planes, which will come as no small surprise to Katrena, Sandra and Helen, who have lots of experience with the misunderstandings I have with so many airline carriers that inexplicably fail to appreciate Caroline Standard Time (CST). Off to collect Sammy today. Woo hoo! Maya Phew! That was a HUUUGE trip! We went on two - count them - two plane rides. The first one was really long and I couldn't sleep much because the chairs were soooo uncomfortable, but I watched Rio and Big Hero 6, which were great! The next ride was shorter, and I fell asleep for all of it, and mum stole my hamburger! I am so excited to see Sam today. I can't wait.... read more

My first trip to China was in the frenetic two months before the Beijing Olympics. Five South Australian ESL teachers provided a summer school in the small rural city of Zheng Zhou (population 6 million). Four intensive weeks of 10 hour days, with an enthusiastic bunch of hardworking, Chinese English teachers. This, my first impression of China was confirmed again in 2012. Teaching in China is a pleasure. Apartments for foreign teachers are good, small and basic. Western toilet, kitchen with hotplates, stove, microwave and sink. Hot water for shower. Air-conditioning, TV, Internet point, bookshelves, hardest bed I’ve ever slept on. Also couch, chairs, tables, one each of plate, cup, knife, saucepan etc. There are birds in the gardens, herons, swallows, sparrows, European magpies, sandpipers, and ones with top fans and others with tail fans Class ... read more

Big day today, We have lots to do, and it will all be physically challenging! I have been dreading this walk! We are going to watch the Shaolin Monks perform in their performance area in the Shaolin Temple area. We got mini buses to the main area, then that is the end of being spoilt. We set of for the performance. It was unbelievable. They are so graceful, yet so strong, and some are very young. The school has about 8000 students being taught Kung Fu there. Fabio and Gloria went on a volunteers, they both did really well. Fabio won! After the performance we set off for Dharma cave where a nun has been living and meditating for four years. It is wwaaaaaaayyyyyyy up towards Wuru Peak on Song Mountain. It was such a hard ... read more
