Our longest train journey yet started from Irkutsk on the weekly train to Beijing via Harbin. The train was one of the newer ones and this time we had a cabin all to ourselves for two days or so. Settling in we realised there was little to do except check out the scenery or read. I decided to catch up on sleep and let Dave get his fill of scenery. When I woke, Dave let me know that there had been plenty of trees and then as the sun rose we were given a lovely view over lake Baikal which the train followed around the southern end, As I had slept for a couple of hours we were nearing the last sight of the lake. From here the train turned east to skirt Mongolia before headings ... read more

After 36 hours in the train, we arrived in Harbin at 4.30 am. And it was cold. Really, really cold. -37 degrees plus wind. Thats nice. Maybe Thailand would have been the better option. Anyway, we are here and it is going to be awesome. Hopefully. The first task was, to find a taxidriver who is willing to use the taximeter. It took almost 20 minutes and gave us a first impression about what such a temperature really feels like. After we arrived at the hostel at around 6am (of course the room is not ready at this time), and a 1 hour nap on the couch, we are brave enough to go outside and find some breakfast. The cheapest way to go from A to B is apperently the bus, so we took it most ... read more

Geo: 45.75, 126.65Luca and I did our quick shop in the morning.Sausages, bread and a Starbucks. Then time to head of to the airport. It was -28. The coldest so far. The inside of the taxi windows where frozen over.If you put your hand against it, it would melt. It took about 14 seconds for it to freeze over.Amazing. You could see the little snow crystals freezing so quick. It is a great place to visit but WOW is it cold.... read more

Geo: 45.75, 126.65 The temperature says it's -23 but it feels like -32.Yes I agree. It was really pretty. When you looked up to the sky it was like glitter was falling. The moisture in the air must be freezing and its falling as small as glitter. It was so beautiful until you breathed.Either your nostril hairs in your nose froze or it actually hurt your lungs when you breathed in.So we were completely covered all you could see was our eyes. I felt like the Michelin Man. Funny enough the cold still crept threw the layers of clothes that I was wearing.Down the road from where we stayed was the St Sophia Church. It's so Russian, so Small and beautiful just plonked there in the square. Its all high rise all around. A Mc Donald's ... read more

Geo: 45.75, 126.65Where to start. It takes forever to get outside the door. All the clothes that you have to put on.It's really silly at the time when you are putting on all of the clothes and you start to sweat even before you can get outside. But then when you get outside you wish you had put on even more clothes....It's really, really, really cold. But unbearably cold.Luca found " " a local alcoholic drink made from bread.... It actually tastes like stale sweet bread. He was very proud of himself and drank it with breakfast... Dumplings. We walked down the main street which was lined with ice sculptures. It was -10. Not so cold... Well the kids threw around some snowballs and then it started to snow. The flakes where huge. They where selling ice blocks.... ... read more

Geo: 45.75, 126.65The Ice Sculptures are over the river so we jumped into a taxi and 30 minute later we had arrived. We stopped at an intersection where they where still building some of the white snow sculptures. They where huge and it really was cold. There was a breeze and it really, really was freezing. This was the first time ii really was cold. I couldn't wait to get back into the taxi. It was 3:30 when we arrived and we where one of the first groups in. The western Face always seems to work in these sort of places. It wasn't cheap but this is Harbin's main attraction and it was worth every bit of it. The sculptures are amazing. They are so tall. It was getting dark very quick at about 4pm. As it ... read more

A common denominator of Japan and China is leadership that denies shameful moments in history. Japanese leaders Ishihara and Nagoya remind me of two museums I visited on my trip to Harbin in 2009. The Germ Warfare Museum and the Harbin Jewish Museum offer two separate accounts of the Second World War within the same city. Harbin, China's Ice Festival town bordering Siberia once had a thriving Jewish Community. In 1937 the Japanese Army set up a prison camp for experimental torture similar to Joseph Mengele's work in Auschwitz. All the while it appears that Harbin's Jewish hybrid looked the other way. Was there any mutual support? What are the lessons learned? Last week Tokyo's Governor url=http:/... read more

A breaking time of my trip to recover my health from malaria, my plan was crossing Himalaya from Nepal to Tibet, but my health condition didn't allow me to do that route, the weather was getting colder in north hemisphere, so I came to south of China to be with family in Chinese new year, and waiting for a warmer weather to restart my journey, because I will go to Pakistan from Xinjiang, and the temperature in Xinjiang will be positive only in March. To get Pakistan visa was another big problem, I tried to apply in Nepal, but the Pakistan embassy staff said the visa will take more than month, maybe 1, 2 or 3 months. When I was in south of China, I called to Pakistan embassy in Hong Kong, they only give the ... read more
