This is the second of two blogs featuring my visit to Haerbin/Harbin in Heilongjiang Province in the NE of China. As previously stated, the main attraction for me to venture into these frozen realms during the coldest Chinese winter in 50 years, was to experience the Haerbin/Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, a series of gala events involving ice and snow carving art. The Ice and Snow Fe... Read Full Entry

Drink and be merry. One of a series of sculptures along one of the main avenues which apparently retells a famous legend. It was not clear what the nationality of the sculptors of this entry were, so can tell you no more!

Let's first look at some of the gigantic sculptures, then we can work our way down to individual artists' pieces. Greek mythology carved in snow. Some of these sculptures were enormous! Remember to enlarge the photos for more detail!

Napoleon "immortalized" (at least temporarily!) in snow. One of the popular French entries.

A distant view of the largest sculpture. It formed the backdrop to the "entertainment area where a variety of snow activities could be indulged in. It is actually the whole sculpture of which the earlier photo of the "flowing hair" was a part.

Despite the impressiveness of the large scale sculptures, I particularly enjoyed wandering the small laneways lined with individual, small-scale entries. Each artist was originally given about a 2m cube shaped block of snow as their starting point. Deceptively simple at first glance, I was impressed with the structural strength and balance but delicateness of many of these smaller entries. What do you think?

What a beautiful Winter Wonderland!
Thank you for sharing your visit to Harbin. It has inspired me to make sure to visit next winter, and brave the infamous cold of the region. The photos are special, and you have captured the spirit, why the winter-ice-festival of Harbin has such a renowned reputation around the world. Thanks for braving the frigid weather of China's winter of 2008, to bring us your memories of "Winter in Harbin".

Tempted
Harbin, with the Russian influence and colored lights ice festival does look very tempting, I must admit. Beautiful pictures of the ice, but you look sooooo cold! Maybe I'll just wait until they get an ice festival in Brisbane......John
