Day 17 - Hangzhou I was very pleased that I had hot well prepared for the journey by getting a Starbucks sandwich and fruit salad for my tea on the train as I really enjoyed it! I struggled sleeping last night due to coughing! But sadly so did the others on my cubicle! I was coughing all night until I decided to sleep sat up a bit, then I finally slept. The night train was ok, but not a comfy as the last one. We arrived in Hangzhou at about 8.30am. We were met by our new guides Miranda and Crystal at the station. We were taken to a cafe for breakfast. I didn't have any as I just want hungry. I had taken some croissants on the train, so had already eaten. After breakfast we ... read more

Wow how these weeks do fly... Last week, I moved out of my apartment. My 6 months there created some pretty awesome memories, but the circumstances being what they were made it time to go - and I am at peace with that. Since then, I have been staying with Taryn in her new apartment, and will continue to do so until August 1 when I can finally settle into my own place. I'm a bit sad that Taryn didn't arrive in Hangzhou one month sooner. I am excited to be moving in with Juliet and Mitch, but I think that Taryn and I have made awesome roommates. She stayed at my place for just over a week as she transitioned to this apartment, and is now returning that favor to me. Both times, we've gotten ... read more

The great thing about living in a place like China - so different from my own home - is that it is easy to find oneself in a constant state of discovery and rediscovery. In my 7 months in China, I can honestly say that I've gone through 7 phases of existence. I've been awestruck, overwhelmed, inspired, agitated, ambitious, secluded and reawakened. This week, I've made a conscious decision to rediscover this place called Hangzhou. I have many new people in my little world over here now, and there are many pockets of the city that I haven't yet seen... and many that I haven't yet seen through the eyes of my new people. This process of rediscovery has reawakened a sense of adventure and appreciation for this whole China experience. It's very easy, no matter ... read more

June has been a busy, busy month in general! Certainly, things have really picked up at work now that I'm receiving more and more responsibility... but socially, things have been exploding as well. Recently, I've felt that I had kind of run out of things to report on in my blog-sphere. But, a friend pointed out that it's not that I'm running out of things to say, it's just that things don't seem so new to me anymore. So, I do have things to talk about, even if it doesn't seem all that interesting to me :) And maybe it's not interesting to you, either. But, here's a bit of a peek into some genuine ex-pat life in China. This month, a lot of my foreign friends have had significant events taking place. We've had birthdays, ... read more

Today, I have officially been in China for six months. It’s hard to believe, really. But half of a year has flown by, and it’s been a wild ride. In trying to think of ways to commemorate this moment, I decided that the best choice was obviously a compilation of Jess-osophies that have come from this experience. Several of these are lines from previous blog posts… others are clips and phrases that have become catches for me… others still are words of wisdom passed to me from some of my best people. For better or for worse, these are the words I’ve come to live by in my six months in China: ~ I'm here, I'm safe, I'm comfortable, and I am freaking aweeessommmmeee :) ~ Small victories. ~ If it smells dirty, it is. ~ ... read more

After our very eventful night, we got up around 7 to walk around the lake. Word on the street was that a family of black swans (Natalie Portman?!?) had moved in and Abby and I were out to spot them. It was rainy and gross but we ventured out. We turned a corner and an angry Chinese woman started yelling at us...not knowing what to do we turned around and walked around the other direction. Almost immediately we found the swans and crept up near them to take some pics. Mission accomplished. We headed back in for breakfast, which surprise to no one, was pork filled. We managed to dodge most of it and grab some eggs, but I'm sure at some point pork was involved. Our first stop for the day was a Green Tea ... read more

Today was extremely hot, but very productive! I woke up early, its impossible to sleep in with the drill hammer going off next door at 7 am. My new friend Jasmine had returned from her friends wedding and her and I were to go shopping! Its so much better shopping with a native, having someone to translate makes a world of a difference. Our first stop was the local herbal shop. They had free herbal tea to drink while you looked around and waited for orders. Jasmine and i looked around at all the different herbal medicines you could buy. She showed me the ones for cleansing your liver, headaches, flu, dizziness, toothache, and get this.. Wetting the bed! They had medicine for everything. I ended up getting a bunch of liver cleanser, a few pimple ... read more

There is an element of Chinese culture that I have been anxious to try, and that is Chinese traditional medicine. The trouble with wanting to try something like this is that it means that one is HOPING to have a medical problem that requires attention… A number of years ago, I pretty well swore off pain medication for most ailments. I’m one of those oogly-boogly types that understands pain (and other discomforts for that matter) to be your body’s way of communicating with you. By popping pain pills, I feel that I am simply muting the public service announcement and doing nothing about the information on the screen. Well, not using pain medication, on the other hand, means that one really needs some way to handle pain and discomfort because otherwise one is just… uncomfortable and ... read more

New hostel! I love it! It is right in, literally in, Wulan square :). It is also conveniently located just about a 8 minute walk to my favorite vegetarian restaurant in town :)! I slept like a rock last night (for the first time in over a week) and got up around 9 am. Even though the weather forecast said it was going to reach 90 degrees today, I was still set on going to the botanical gardens. I made sure to apply lots of sunscreen and packed my bags full for the day. I left around 10 and found a coffee shop around the corner that had a sign in the window saying "best coffee in hangzhou!" So i decided to give it a try. There is no such thing as drip coffee in China. ... read more

I finished my paper today =) Perri Rae Davis05/22/13Business and Culture Along the Silk Roads 2013 Prefix:I took a journey half way across the world in hopes of building my awareness and to discover all of the possibilities in changing our world. With my classmates, teachers, and new friends, I explored a new culture and gained a different view on the opportunities that are presented in front of me. Through exploring new foods, religions, and cultural customs, I have been exposed to new ways of thinking and views of the way our world works, and why and how our relationships are built. I did my best to explain my experiences in words that mirror the amount of change that has happened inside of me. My paper is a summery of events that has happened over the ... read more
