Geo: 18.2458, 109.478Gill & Johns Guide to ChinaOur last couple of days in China have been spent being looked after and well fed in an international style hotel. A quick walk up the beach to build a few sand castles (see the pictures) and then sitting by the pool forcing down some very nice beef burgers (even better than Gills) or eating in an Italian restaurant. Nothing of interest to you dear reader so instead below are our thoughts and suggestions to anyone who wants to follow in our footsteps;Everyone we know who has been to China returns and says "you won't believe the rate of change". Everyone is quite right, no guidebook or map is worth the paper it is written on, it will be out of date before it is printed. The changes aren't ... read more

Geo: 18.2458, 109.478Despite the lousy weather forecast the sun is just about showing it's face through the clouds. Now we had a chance to explore our room and the rest of the hotel a little better and of course tested the toilet! As advertised previously we have a fiendish Japanese style toilet. Gill has been too much of a coward to try it but in the cause of science and to help inform you dear reader I have risked life, limb and private parts. There is a control panel next to the toilet and when the buttons are pressed a little pipe moves out of the toilet seat and squirts your bum with warm water. It is not gentle, see the photographs. There are two different jets which can be stationary or wave about.Once you have been ... read more

Geo: 18.2458, 109.478Our last day in the country, we very much enjoyed our time in Yangshuo, one area we would like to come back to. There is nothing wrong with Beijing, Shanghai and Xian but once you have seen the sights then there is less reason to go back. The area we have been in (pointy mountains, villages, slow way of life) would be worth spending a lot longer in.On the way to the airport we visited some limestone caves, very large and spectacularly lit, but nothing very special, and then our driver took us to what the hotel billed as a stone village. Actually it was a group of houses about 300 years old which have not been restored, there was lots of woodworm and dodgy floorboards but it was great, dare I say, to ... read more

Thursday March 20th, left Hong Kong for an hour and 30 min plane ride to Sanya China. Sanya is located on the Southern Tip of China and is the Florida/ Arizona of China. I stayed at The Renaissance Hotel. Beautiful hotel, it is isolated and about 50 minutes from the airport and 40 minutes from downtown Sanya. If you are new to traveling to China, I highly recommend you hire a driver who speaks english and book tours. The locals at the resort speak limited English and when hailing taxi's or in downtown china besides Hello or Bye Bye there is no English. Or start brushing up on your Mandarin :) .. The goal of this holiday was to see more of Asia and to just relax and enjoy the sun and beach. I did make ... read more

Friday, 9th August 2013 The countryside was decked with beautiful shades of green which most visitors would not have the time to linger on since they would be heading straight to the beaches. Breakfast at the Red Star Café this morning was an unforgettable experience. The huge restaurant was decorated in traditional Chinese furnishings with dark rosewood interiors overlooking the resort's infinity pool. The spread was enormous with a good mix of Asian and Western staples. Eggs Benedict was a surprise find at the cooking station available in both Hainanese and traditional versions. The only tourist facility that we visited during our two nights in Sanya was the Nanshan Temple, part of the sprawling Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone. This was about 60km from where we stayed along the southern coast of Hainan Island. The landmark of ... read more

Thursday, 8th August 2013 Tiger Airways flight TR 2934 brought us straight to the city of Haikou in Hainan Province this morning. This was our seventh overseas trip together for our party of five. Our travel arrangements were made as early as January in anticipation of the super long weekend crunch. The journey began at Changi International Airport for the three hours flight to Haikou Meilan Airport. This was followed by a two-hour rail journey to Sanya Station where our resort was another 40 minutes drive from the train station. All in all, we probably spent half a day commuting to url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g297427-d2026664-r171878380-Renaissance_Sanya_Resort_Spa-Sanya_Hainan.htmlRenaissance Sanya even though I certainly enjoyed the comfortable train journey. YOU CAN'T TAKE ME, I'M FREE" Spirit I am currently working on several posts that I need to do a little research for, but it's difficult because I don't have an internet connection in my accomodation, so they're taking a little longer than I intended, hence the las few posts being entirely about how I am thinking and feeling. I'll keep working on them and maybe they'll be finished by the time I get home... but in the meantime, a post about the cheerless subject of leaving Sanya - where I have spent the last 5 tumultuous months of my life. Enjoy ^^ I can’t read through an entire piece of travel writing in the order that it’s meant to be read. An emotion that is best described as excitement and longing takes over and I ... read more

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” - Buddha .... And, on Chinese New Year, thousands of incense sticks will be lit from the flame at Nanshan Temple, and the fragrance will float around the thousands of people who, just like me, decided to visit on what must have been the busiest day of the year. This better be the luckiest damn year of my life. I did a personality test today - turns out I’m ENFP, who, and I quote, "often have strong, if sometimes surprising, values and viewpoints... this sometimes results in the ENFP neglecting their nearest and dearest while caught up their efforts to change the world." So yeah, sorry if I'm neglecting you, ... read more

Xin Nian Kuai Le" 新年快樂 Hello Fellow Earth Dwellers, Happy Chinese New Year. I know it's been a really long time since I have posted... and for some of you, that means that you haven’t had much contact with me since way before Christmas - and I am sorry. It was becoming a bit of a chore for me to update you every week about the goings on here in Sanya - and to be honest, I wasn't really enjoying writing "and then I did this, and then I did that". It is a very self-interested and egotistical style and I was getting a little sick of it. Everyone I know, knows that I'm having a great time out here - because I have a great time everywhere I go - I'm used to roughing it.. ... read more
