So, I'm on the plane and I don't think that we've actually arrived in chinese airspace yet...but I can't sleep and now seems as good a time as ever to write my very first entry. Wev been through a few different time systems, and we think that we've been following the sun across the world, though I'm not totally sure about that. We've had a lovely in flight dinner, and brekkie will be served in about 45 mins...which should be interesting... Though we didn't realise it, we appear to be stopping in Beijing on the way to Guangzhou...which, although a slightly random route, will be cool to be able to look out of the window and see the sprawling mass which is chinas capital city. We're all very excited to be arriving in haikou tonight (at ... read more

Woke up to our first day of rain in Yanshuo, fortunately we were leaving today. After breakfast we finished packing up and began our travels to Hainan! Our bus to Guilin was stopping constantly trying to gather any stragglers to bump their wage for the day I guess! It ended up arriving in Guilin far later than we anticipated but we were lucky that another was running in an hour. After some corn on the cob and spicy sausage we were loading onto the bus. No room in luggage section so all bags were rammed in the aisle, clearly not designed for walking on. We had picked a sleeper bus just to sample but the bed was tiny, nowhere near enough room to lie out fully, although Laura was really snug. As we set off it ... read more

As I write this, Martin is downstairs possibly losing our money in a poker game with random guys we met at the hostel. Luckily 100 kuai is only around 15 USD, so he can't lose that much. :) Haikou is an interesting place. There really isn't much to do, and we weren't expecting there to be. It was a VERY cheap flight, and a cheap place to stay for a couple of nights...but not necessarily a 'must-see' on your tour of SE Asia. We had talked to enough people about it to be prepared though, so that's good. We probably could have booked just one night here and been satisfied. After checking in and getting settled at our hostel yesterday (Wednesday), we set out to explore the city around us. We went to a nearby restaurant ... read more

Well, we made it. Barely. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 7:40am, and we live a quick 5 minute bus ride away, so we woke up at 5:20am and aimed to catch a bus no later than 6:40, which we thought would be the first available bus. We to our bus stop at 6:30 and waited and waited and waited.....We were getting nervous, but didn't want to take a taxi yet. We should have. By 7:00 no bus and no taxis were around, so we ran to the main road where finally a taxi cut off three lanes of fast moving traffic and picked us up for a 20RMB ride t the airport. By bus it would have cost around 4RMB. The taxi driver must have figured out we were in a hurry, and blatantly ... read more

Due to various internet difficulties, there were a number of blog posts that got written and were not published, so I thought that it would be easiest if I just gave you the summary of my vacation (with pictures!) broken down into however many parts I feel like. The first day of my vacation was National Day, which honestly wasn't very different than any other day except that there were people selling Chinese flags on the street and when I went to the supermarket, there were people watching the festivities in Beijing on the televisions in the electronics department (they were still on 7 hours later when we went out to dinner, but at that point, we were the only people who seemed at all interested, at least at the restaurant where we were). The most ... read more

Have just finished two weeks of teaching conversational English at the Haikou Municipal Educational Research & Training Academy. This is our fourth year teaching with Global Volunteers & the most fun. Our team of 17 bonded quickly & the laughter & companionship developed quickly! Each morning we boarded the bus at 8AM & returned to the hotel by noon for lunch. Roy & I shared a class, consisting of 9 students, all Chinese English teachers. They were eager to increase their ability to speak conversational English. Teachers teach their English class 'from the book'. Once out of the university, they do not have much opportunity to speak conversational English. Day of our final class, the Academy gave a closing ceremony & each class sang songs........ours sang 'WELCOME TO ISLAND OF HAINAN' & dressed in native Hainan ... read more

It was an honor to be invited to Yongxing, a small village outside Haikou City, to celebrate Gongqi, an annual celebration of ancestors. It is a day for the families to gather together to pray for their ancestors and share a meal. Two of our students, who I taught last year through Global Volunteers, invited us to share a meal with their family. Our guides to the village, were two of our students from class this year, who also teach in Yongxing middle school. We went by taxi and, because of a big traffic jam, it took 1 1/2 hours to reach the village from Haikou City......normally it would be an hour journey. When we arrived, our two friends were waiting for us, plus two more students from last year. It was such fun to see ... read more

After very little sleep on the ferry, we arrived tired and grumpy at HaiKou. The usual mob of taxi drivers hounded us, but we are growing accustom to that now, so we calmly choose one and set off for a hotel listed in our bible. The hotel was amazing quality for a 'budget' choice, Mark had already stolen all the freebies before we even had chance to check-in! After a hard nights travel, a nap was well deserved. Our Primary mission: Find a way to get to VietNam from Hainan island. Our hotel was very central to we walked through the park to the main shopping district in search of some travel agencies. Our bible had let us done (shock, horror). The one we were aiming for had now moved. After walking for what seemed like ... read more

In ancient China, the southern Island of Hainan was known as the "end of the world". It is the place, to which many brave dissenters and critics of China's Imperial Dynasties and its emperors were exiled. One of the most outspoken critics of the Song Dynasty was China's ancient, grand poet Su Dongpo, who was exiled to Hainan between 1097 A.D. and 1100 A.D. by the Song Dynasty emperor. He described his journey to the "tropical" Island of Hainan, located on the southern tip of China, with these words: "... Having visited the wonder, I never feel regretful, though gone through difficulties and hardships." (Let me lament on my difficulties and hardships during my visit to China's tropics, the Island of Hainan, in this TravelBlog. For a time, I too thought it was my "end of ... read more
