If you watch the video you will get a summary of exactly what we see in all areas of the campus, from dawn till dusk, every day since we arrived, and you will probably be as curious as we were as to who these guys are and why they are training like this. You would assume that it's the army, but after approaching many of them we gradually found out that these are actually the new students, and not just a select few: every single Chinese fresher in every university in China has to take part in 17 days of military training in their first few weeks at uni. Mad. It's their almost completely opposite, communist equivalent of Fresher's Week. They start at 5.40 every day and carry on until 9pm, with short breaks. Many, including ... read more

On the day the Freshers had all been training for, we made it a priority to find a way into the show. If you haven't read the previous entry, basically all of the First Year students are required to do military training for 17 days when they first arrive at university, and on this day, there was to be a climactic show on campus where they would show off what they had learned. A guard at the entrance to the sports ground told us we weren't allowed in. We walked through a different entrance via some open tennis table rooms and toilets, which made the guarding system seem silly. As is often the case, once you are inside there is no problem, because everyone assumes that someone more important than them has given permission, and they ... read more

It's been quite a while since my last entry, but il try to get you up to speed... Firstly, we got to the gym, finally, a few days after playing tennis and it's surprisingly good! It's pretty much all free weights, and if you overlook weights held together with random wires and a few very dodgy looking pieces of equipment, it could almost be England! We've had a couple (or 3?!) weeks of Chinese lessons now, which have been really good, quite challenging and at some points you just kinda look at the teacher thinking 'what the bloody hell are you talking about?!', but most of the time it's alright! The big thing we've done recently is camp on a beach...the plan was to originally go to sanya, but due to the fact that itl be ... read more

So, cycling to the beach didn't totally work, It turns out that Haikou is a lot bigger than we originally thought!!! We did see a huge park with loads of chinese people flying kites though, which was quite interesting. We also discovered a building project that perfectly illustrates how ridiculous the chinese are...there were lorries and lorries full of rocks driving out along a small track out to sea, which we thought was quite weird, and then we discovered that they were trying to build another island out at sea...that would be connected to Hainan by a tiny track about 5 foot above sea level, kinda dodgy considering that there are about 2 months of typhoon weather a year, and any kind of rough sea will leave this little island completely isolated. Anyway, not to be ... read more

After a crazy first week out here, I've finally got round to making a blog! For now I'm just putting up some photos to let them do the talking, so enjoy! Very soon I'll put up a few stories of the many weird and wonderful things that have happened over the last 7 days. It has been very, very, very strange... Here are images of the more calm times :-)... read more

Next entry, So, I'm lying here recovering from an absolutely terrible beijiu hangover...but we'll come to that... Yesterday we decided that having bikes would definitely be worth it, so we decided to go to carrefour and buy bikes, apparently carrefour has literally everything! We ended up wandering around carrefour for ages and finding some pretty interesting things, including turtles, frogs and deer penis...very weird. The bikes there were actually way too small for us, which was annoying, but we had a good explore and then because our chinese friend nick was with us we decided we'd continue our pursuit of bicycles in one of the market areas of the city. We caught tuktuks there and ended up in a pretty rundown area of haikou. There were loads of small shops all competing with each other and ... read more

I haven't had a blog for a couple of days now, so il try to fill you guys in on everything that's happened so far... the day before yesterday we did some admin in the morning...generally just trying to pay for accommodation and shizzle, and then, because Hannah had to wait in halls for the Internet man to come (he does the Internet, you see...) Pete and I decided to go for a cheeky lunch in a restaurant just over the road from beimen (north gate). We didn't really know what to expect, but we'd been told that the nicer restaurants were off to the left, feeling like we deserved a treat, we headed over there. After looking for a while we came upon quite a busy restaurant with pots on every table bubbling away and ... read more

Right, next entry! Wev been in Hainan for a couple of days now, and it's all been a ridiculously hectic rush trying to do all kinds of things. Luckily today we've had a Chinese student helping us all day, I don't know her real name, but we've nicknamed her Han Solo. We also met up with Sai Hou, a Chinese student who was in Newcastle last year, it was completely by coincidence, but she ended up spending a lot of time with us today aswell just helping Han Solo sort stuff out. Today we managed to go to the police office to tell them that we were in the country...which was completely unsuccessful, as apparently we need residence letters from Haida to prove to them that we're really there and not some trick of the light ... read more

Ok...so sleep didn't work, and when we got over Beijing we couldn't see anything anyway because the visibility was down to no more than half a Km due to smog...we got out of the plane and could taste it in our mouths which was interesting... We're just waiting in the plane at guangzhou to take off on our final leg of the journey and thankfully its not too small...it's not huge, but there's a good 300 people on board. And it's just us three and two German girls wev met who are westerners on the whole flight...everyone else is Chinese...which is quite crazy. Also on the last flight we made friends with two chinese women and had a good half hour conversation with them which was quite entertaining...and a large part of that was them trying ... read more
