I have actually been at university all this time, not only going on adventures! This blog will look at what it's like to be a Chinese student in both it's meanings: Firstly, what it is like to study Chinese, and secondly what is it like to be Chinese and study. Both are not particularly photogenic but hopefully interesting for those who aren't studying or being Chinese. Chinese takes about three times as long to learn as European languages, because there is almost nothing about it that is similar. Those funny little characters represent roughly one word (or basic meaning) each, although many words are made of two or three, and there are no spaces separating where one word begins and one ends. In total there are 50,000 characters that can be learned, each one unique, although ... read more

No, that title doesn't mean mum and dad were delivering comedy in Chinese. Although they were receiving a few laughs whilst out here, such as from our host one night watching Dad trying to eat a crab with chopsticks, or from the tea shop owners who ripped them off in Beijing. In fact the speech was delivered by me in a charity show in the university the same week, which I will describe later, but first things first, I hadn't seen my parents for 7 months and it was wonderful to see them, so lets get onto that. The 'rents were lucky enough to be put up in a five star hotel for the week for around £30 a night by an influential Chinese friend of mine, and I think the rooftop swimming pool went down ... read more

We had our train ticket back to Haikou in the late afternoon so we rented a couple of bikes and went riding around town. Most people couldn’t speak English so we had to get by with my cave man mandarin. “want this”, “how much”, “go there” etc... It was too cold to ride for too long so spent allot of the time at the resorts beach side cafe. On the way back on the train we were assigned to a 6 seater cabin a meet a high level manager of Hainan Airlines and his assistant who spoke a little bit of English. Once we got back to Haikou our friends and family treated us to dinner where we had the 4th Hainan delicacy black goat. It was tasty but wasn’t too appetising, the just hacked up ... read more

On the morning of the 11.01.2011 we left for BoAo on the newly opened fast train service in Hainan. It wasn’t the super bullet train that China has been making headlines with it sure was nice and not to mention fast. It did around 250km/hr. We decided to upgrade to first class which was 48 Yuan (about NZ$10). It was double the price of the standard fare but well worth it. We got a two seater cabin to ourselves it was fantastic! The highlight of the day. Hmm What can I say about BoAo hmmm about that. There was pretty much nothing there. BoAo held some Asian international business forum a few years back and they use the site where it happened as an attraction FUN . Oh and they also had a boat ride to ... read more

And so our adventure begins, leaving the familiarity of Hong Kong and venturing into the unknown. All the parents of friends here are very worried for us, so there is a lot of reassuring to be done that we will be ok!! Hong Kong to Shenzhen by train and we were out into the hustle and bustle. The taxi driver offering a rather expensive ride to the airport was tempting, but Pete assured me we would be able to metro+bus it with the help of lonely planet and his android google maps function. Which worked a treat! He was far more onto it than me - I just followed like a sheep! But we made it fine :-) At the airport we had time to kill - so our first taste of china KFC! they have ... read more

Here are a few videos of me failing at various athletic events in the Hainan University decathlon. This was back in November. Me and Ben signed up all full of confidence, mistakenly believing that we would have a higher average ability over ten different events than most Hainan students. The fact that neither of us had ever tried a pole vault before, and that I had a sprained calf muscle, and that some of the students specialise in athletics for their degree didn't really phase us, but maybe it should have. We spent the month before the competition going to the sports ground every few days to see what pieces of equipment happened to be out that we could paractise with. Health and safety was non-existent, as people would be practising javelin with people still walking ... read more

So,I’v finally got that blog up, I actually wrote it on the monster plane journey home for a couple of weeks to see everyone. It was really nice to be back, got to have a couple of weekends at home and had a week up in Newcastle, though theres no denying it, england is bloody freezing!!! Had a fun night out on Wednesday and some lovely home food cooked by momma and Clare, and was kinda sad to go back to Hainan at the end of it... The flight did, however give me plenty of opportunity to plan my new years holiday plans, and considering that I have around 2 months of travelling, I intend to see lots and lots!!! Have already planned out some travelling with Clare until the 10th of Jan, but then. I ... read more

Right... I feel bad, as I don't think iv posted anything for about a bazillion days, so il try to get you guys up to date with my various escapades... I'm kinda doing this the wrong way round, but I'm first gonna talk about this weekend we've just had, at Hainan's international championship. It has been wicked! We went down on the saturday early on the morning, as we thought that there was gonna be loads on, which, in fact there wasn't, but we did get to explore a bit and meet quite a few people...an have lunch at a place called ma ma's. The beach that we went to is called riyueruan and it's on the east coast of Hainan, as that's where the best surf is at the moment. When we arrived the waves ... read more

We jokingly asked some Chinese student friends if we could join in with their daily routine of military training, and before we knew it they had sourced out two uniforms (with the biggest size of shoe possible still being too small for Ben's feet) and told us we start the next day at 5.40 in the morning. At 5.40am when we arrived at the meeting point under the palm trees by the campus sports ground, it was still dark, and all we could make out was a mass of hundreds of people with crew-cut black hair and camouflaged uniform. It was a bit like a 'Where's Wally' game trying to see which two of these student soldiers were the friends who we were supposed to be meeting. The advantage of the darkness was that no-one realised ... read more
