Our tourguide in Hangzhou
"We all go together!!!" (Try to say this with a Celine Dion Chinese Accent) Dear Erin,
I'm so inspired by the story of you and Sean!!! How great it is to find someone you love, and love you, to make the commitment of spending the rest of your lives together, to sell everything, to be together, off on an adventure. This is definitely the dream!!!
Your student,
Lily
I close the email and sit in front of my computer musing. Lily’s synopsis of our adventure is a perfect reflection of those simple values Sean and I committed to when we married almost a year ago. Love each other. Be together. Have an adventure.
Although I have traveled extensively on my own, having Sean with me has lent a depth that I would not have realized on my own. Our conversation continues from one day to the next as we comment on the philosophical consequences of all we see and try to understand. As each new piece falls into place, we constantly integrate these new ideas into a working analysis of how we see the world and our place in it. This ongoing conversation of ours has taken on a life of its own- it is continuous; without beginning
or end.
Sean and I have also developed our own language of sorts. Never again will we be able to say the word “together” properly. This is all Sean’s fault. If he hadn't commented that our tour guide in Hangzhou “speaks English with a Chinese Celine Dion accent", then perhaps we would still be able to say that word properly. His special term (grossness) for my favorite fermented vegetable snack has replaced what it really is called and one of our biggest day-to-day concerns is the “willy nilly” way the Chinese go about doing things.
We also did find out that there is such a word as “velour” and even though he was extremely jealous, Sean did find it in his heart to buy me a beautiful pair of hot pink velour pajama bottoms. I do suspect, however, that Sean only bought me the hot pink velour pants to distract me from my most fashionable Monsieur pants so he could steal them. But that is another story for another day. Regardless of his hidden intentions, I treasure my velour pants and wear them almost every night to bed.
Another treasure has been our hot pot Friday nights.
We head down to a street side vendor and spend hours there, eating good food, drinking cheap beer and talking about our crazy plans for the future. One of the best things of being in China with Sean has been the amount of time we have been able to share with one another. Twelve hours of work a week has meant that Sean and I have had the luxury of a super extended honeymoon, where most of our days are spent in wandering, eating well and conversing. I suspect that- when I am old and reflecting on this year of my life- it will be the simple act of sharing so much time and space with Sean that I will remember. It has been a gift.
So even if Sean is still somewhat embarrassed when I wear my toesocks out in public, I do consider him a gift from the universe. I am truly blessed to “to find someone you love, and love you, to make the commitment of spending the rest of your lives together, to sell everything, to be together, off on an adventure”.
Sean, I love you. It has been better than a
dream.
The adventure continues...
