Christmas in office
It’s getting quite festive here but still not the same as home, decorations are going up including a Christmas tree. The party is tomorrow, and we still have a whole lot of planning to do. So far today I have spent the whole time downloading Christmas songs (I’m in charge of music), which so far has made me miss home the most, a New Zealand Christmas would be quite nice.
Apparently other than doing music and games I will also be filling the role of Santa Claus, which will be quite odd as I am still quite far off a big white beard and the big belly, however I do think I have gained some weight since being here, all the eating out and the amount of eating we do.
Anyway since the last update . . .
One night we decided to use the face cleansing masks they gave me for my birthday (from the office), which might explain the rather scary picture of Paris in the bathroom.
We went to another restaurant near our house in a rather backstreet where they sold dog (looked more like puppies), lamb, and chicken. The pictures they
used didn’t really make me hungry to try it. Unfortunately the only pictures of the food they sold was the one with the dog, so we had to again just point at the words meaning we ate some odd things which I have no idea what it was.
The next day we thought it was time to get some western food that was McDonalds (I really wanted a sandwich) so we went on the adventure to visit a really big supermarket we had been told about that was part of the American Wal-Mart chain. We found it after a long metro ride and some taxiing, it was huge, but still very expensive, and all in all abit of a let down. I did get some peanut butter though and ham and bread. They still sold the typical things we find in Chinese supermarkets like crocodile heads, turtles (very cheap) and all sorts of live sea creatures. When we went to pay at the supermarket we had to join up which was really expensive but we decided to go for it anyway, but it may work out ok as I want to get a proper cell phone and so far
that’s been the cheapest place to sell it that I know will not be fake.
That evening we went back to DaBei Lu our nearest shopping street, I found nothing at all (still searching for a Christmas jersey, proving very difficult and running out of days). However we did go to the giant gaming arcade on the top floor of our local mall, hundreds and hundreds of games it had like sub arcades for each game category, Very cheap and a lot of fun. Its seems to be a very popular pastime.
Then it was our day off (we decided to only take one day off and save one for next week) so I pre-planned an action packed day, but I did not count on China having one of its super rains (when it rains in china it really rains, seems like they haven’t heard of drizzle round here) but still we went to the DaFu forest park, by the time we got there it was really raining and we had to decided whether we stay or come back another day, but then! Along comes a lady in a golf cart who will drive us around for 12
My bedroom
Featuring my fantastic mosquito tent. (and note the NZ flag) Yuan ($2.4) for half an hour, sounds like a good deal and we got to see the park, by the time it finished rain was clearing alittle so we hired bikes, not just any bikes, but two person bikes! One each aswell, it was like riding a limousine bike, we rode around for hours, on road and off-road, exciting plenty. The quickly we speed home on the bus (which seem like they’re made for little people, very small) and we dry our selves and take the metro to ShangXiaLiu Lu one of Guangzhou premier shopping streets, which turned out to be much better than Beijing Lu (supposed to be Guangzhou best shopping street) ShangXiaLiu Lu was huge we shopped all day and well into the night but we barely touched it, there were thousands of shops with each little arcade turning into huge multi story malls. I bought some clothes I’m pretty happy with and such bargain prices I bought 4 pairs of jeans for $6.5 New Zealand each, though not the highest quality, 2 broke when I tried them on at home. I also got a very cheap gold and black adidas track suit, an orignalfake hoody and some
Nike high tops, very cheap experience.
The next day it was all planned that we go decoration shopping with Kate and her friend Winnie (our newest friend) for the party. Just before we left some people from our agency came to the office and introduced us to another guy who has just arrived from Australia who will be working in our district. From what he said we have a much better deal than he does with a much more relaxed job and better students.
The shopping excursion was heaps of fun; we bought a Santa Clause outfit I’m supposed to be wearing and 120 Christmas hats for the party guests. Kate didn’t want to go back on the metro at rush our time, it is very scary. So we just kept shopping until a lot later, then on the way back we went to a really cool sushi place, I think the best sushi I have ever had and it came round on a little conveyor belt so double bonus. The best type I ate I think was with eel, very tasty.
After that we had to go back to work to drop off the bags and
to clock out (a very easy day at work, felt rather slack but we were with the boss so its all ok) straight after that we went back to big arcade with Jonathon, Kate and Winnie, were we played games for hours, it seem that here the girls are much more interested in computer games than girls in western society, Kate was much better than me and the shooting games and air hockey, but still I won with the driving. A very very fun evening, and can’t wait to go back.
Yesterday I had another lesson, where I covered airport English, quite a fun lesson, but still I would like more students, I still have very few as we are only allowed new enrolments. We suggested to the bosses that we go out to the street and do alittle advertising, as marketing seems to be their biggest issue.
And last night we went to another club, were again we got taken straight to a little private VIP lounge above everybody else, and got extreme levels of service, I don’t quite understand why we always get this treatment but I don’t complain.
Today I have no classes
so a nice relaxed day for me, after work I’m going to head back to DaBei Lu in another but my final attempt to find a Christmas jersey before tomorrows Christmas party.
