Three holidays are making their way through China's culture: The second most important holiday in the country, Mid-Autumn Festival and the consumption of the Moon-cakes with family and friends was celebrated on September 12th; Teachers' Appreciation Day was remembered on September 11th; and China's National Holiday will be on the calendar on October 1st. I want to wish all of my friends, collegues, and students around China very happy and joyful holidays. Thank you for the many boxes of moon-cakes, which are still adding inches to my waistlines, and the wonderful flowers, that brought so much color and fragrance to my home on campus. Over the past few weeks, I have been working hard on my TravelBlog, to catch-up with some of my recent travel-experiences around China. I do hope you find time to read them ... read more

I have officially finished the summer school session in Yongchuan. The first half went really slow but the second half seemed to fly by! Overall, I think it went well. Its hard to really teach kids oral communication when your class size is close to 30 and your classes are only 45 minutes long. I tried my best though and I really hope the kids were able to take something away from my lessons. Yongchuan area really started to grow on me. I am glad I wasn't placed right in the heart of Chongqing city - that would have been a bit too intense. Instead, I am in the 'new' part of Yongchuan so it is much less crowded and quite easy to get around. I have really fell in love with a few of the ... read more

Food is one of my favorite things about other countries. I love international food! I find it has way more flavor and variety than food in Canada. I have been here for just over a week and in that time I have had the opportunity to try a lot of different local specialties. Being the only foreigner here has its advantages as the other (local) teachers have really taken it upon themselves to show me around and help me eat! After my first day of work (August 1st) we all we went for Hot Pot. This is the most famous dish to come out of Chongqing. Hot Pot involves a big pot in the middle of your table. There is a propane burner underneath and the pot is full of some of the spiciest ingredients you ... read more

For those of you who know me well, you know that I LOVE grocery shopping. I especially love grocery shopping in other countries. I think that grocery stores are some of the greatest places on earth. Going to a Chinese supermarket is especially fun when you go with other Chinese people. We usually go to either Ren Ren Le or New Century Supermarket. I am always asking ‘what’s this’ and ‘what’s that’ and ‘what about this’. I am sure I am as annoying as anything you have ever met before but I don’t care. The Chinese grocery store is sensory overload. The other day, on one of our many visits, I found an entire wall of packaged chicken feet with chili peppers. An entire wall! One of the other teachers told me that they are so ... read more

On Sunday, August 7th one of the teachers and I made our way into the heart of CQ city. We had to take a public bus from the school and then transfer to another public bus to get to the long distance bus station in Yongchuan. From there we got on another bus that would take us to CQ city. It would have been extremely difficult if I did this by myself – some might even say impossible. I still haven’t seen another ‘westerner’ in Yongchuan as its not really on the tourist map for China. CQ city is one of the world’s largest cities by population and by area. It has around 30 million people in it! It is also known as one of China’s 3 ‘furnaces’. In other words, it gets really hot in ... read more

I have finished 1 week of the 3 week summer school course and it is going pretty good. I ended up moving into a dorm room on campus. My apartment was wonderful, if I was staying long term. It had a great kitchen and was in a great location downtown but it just wasn’t feasible for me to live there for 3 weeks. I would have had to buy all of my kitchen supplies and get transport every day to work until I figured out how to get to my school (which would have most likely taken me the whole 3 weeks!) By living on campus I have access to the cafeteria for food whenever I want. I am also a 10 second walk to my office and I have internet access (which I didn’t have ... read more

It feels good to finally be at my (current) destination. Yesterday I flew from Narita, Japan to Dalian, China. I then flew from Dalian to Taiyuan to Chongqing. It was a long day of flying. After arriving in CQ I had an almost 2 hour drive to the Yongchuan district, which is where my new school is located. It was very late and dark out so I couldn't see much. Yongchuan district is most famous for its bamboo forest and tea mountain. In terms of China, however, its not that famous. I got dropped off at my apartment and was told to be at my school at 8:30 the next morning. I had NO idea where the school or how long it would take me to get there. I originally thought that my apartment would be ... read more

Hi All, So our journey to South-West China has begun and our first stop is here in Chongqing and another ex-capital of China ticked off the list. We can't have many left to visit! We left Shaoyang Monday luchtime on a sleeper coach. First time we've travelled on one of those. It was more comfortable than a normal coach although the bunk was Chinese size ie small. A 13 hour journey from Shaoyang to Chongqing. The first of many bus trips to come. We've enjoyed our short stay here. Well I say we, Dany had to spend a day in bed yesterday with a dodgy stomach. Yesterday flying solo I went to Ciqikou Ancient Town. It was OK but very touristy with the buildings down the main drag being heavily restored and all the shops selling ... read more

Today was an early morning but have no fear we were up at 6am? Without even trying? Ugh! We were ready to embark on our first school visit. The school was just around the corner from our hotel and affiliated with the University. It.Blew.Our.Minds! This giant school, located on a small plot of land in the middle of the city, was astonishing and unlike anything you would see in Canada. Due to the temperate climate the school has a open air concept? All the hallways are outside and the school is a confusing labyrinth 7 stories high. When we reached the school the groups were divided into two parts each sitting in on different elementary classes. Each class was packed with at least 50 students who were the most well behaved students I have ever seen….seriously! ... read more
