For me, as far as experiences in China go, the four-day cruise on this mighty river must be one of those at the very top of the list. From the commencement in Yicheng to the time we spent in Chongqing on disembarkation, it can only be described as mind opening and thrilling. Flying in from Shanghai on China Airlines we were, unbelievably, served a very tasty hot meal (choice of pasta, chicken or pork- surprise one), for such a fairly short flight of only ninety minutes (North America airlines - wake up!). While in Yicheng we visited a museum and marveled at the artifacts recovered before the water swallowed the ancient sites on completion of the dam. Later, with a stout pole resting across his lean shoulder, our porter picked up our two heavy suitcases, and ... read more

SATURDAY 17/10/215 Leisurely morning this morning, pick up 9.30a.m. and 1 hour to Beijing Railway Station for a 1.50p.m. departure for Yichang on the Yangtze River. Security checks, passports, tickets etc checked and double checked, one our of guys had bought a toy gun for his grand child, NO GO!!! Bags searched etc so throw that one away. Learnt this morning that one of group had died, we hadn’t seen them since the first day of arrival as he wasn’t feeling well…how horrible! His poor wife, they were from Tyabb. Like a sheep shed down at this railway station, thousands of people boarding trains to all over China, got away on time at 1.50p.m, lots of shananigans on the train, we have a very unusual family from Coffs Harbour, mother, son maybe 30-35 and the mums ... read more

It seemed pretty close on the map, and was supposed to be just a quick 2h high speed train ride away, but Chengdu to Chongqing took a whole lot longer than I'd anticipated. Pretty much my own fault though. First, thanks to these confusing large Chinese cities, I'd gone to the wrong train station, then when I finally got to the correct one, the tickets were sold out, so I had to opt for the slower bus ride instead. But the bus wasn't going directly to Chongqing, but rather one of the smaller towns on the outskirts. Somehow though, there was an opportunity to transfer midway through the journey to a Chongqing bound bus. And so what was supposed to be a pretty straightforward and short journey ended up taking almost the entire day. And what ... read more

Geo: 29.5591, 106.518 After our spiritually uplifting, much too short time in Tibet, we flew back to China, to Chongqing to meet and board our cruise ship, our home for the next three days. I did not want to leave Tibet, to leave Yarpel, our guide and teacher. Tibet is unique; it pulls you in and thumps you on the head, challenging you to breathe, to regain the normal functioning of your body, to wonder what will happen to this beautiful, intense country, and ultimately, to be a better person. But we left. Late on Tuesday we finally boarded the Victoria Anna. Everything was very comfortable, but unlike the other ships I've been on --to Antarctica and to Holland & Belgium-- the bathroom had not only an enclosed shower, but a bathtub as well. No more ... read more

Left our home of 4 days today and are back on dry land .... at Chongqing. This is the largest city in China and I have never heard of it. We stay overnight and catch our flight home at 11.45pm tomorrow so arrive in Sydney around midday on Tuesday. Haven't really had time to explore ourselves today but have seen the pandas at the zoo, went to another old "Chinatown" (I think every city in China has one) and a beautiful park. We have a free morning tomorrow so will go exploring (hopefully not get lost) before heading out to the airport. Cruise was better than expected. The rooms and the food were ok and we had the option of tours morning and afternoon. Beautiful scenery again and went through the "ship lock" around half way ... read more

Well, well, well! The experience for booking a trip to China continues to have it's ups and downs. This last week, more so than others. This week our hotel in Chengdu cancelled on us saying that the renovations were not finished. So I needed to find and book something new. Then our hotel in Guilin did the same. So 2 cancellations and 2 rebookings and notifying anyone and everyone who needs to know has been done (I hope). On the upside, the Panda Volunteer Program that we were going to work with is still not open due to the outbreak of distemper and the death of some pandas (this is not the upside) but (this is the upside). The personal guide that we have booked has managed to secure a volunteer day at a smaller Panda ... read more

Geo: 29.5591, 106.518Chongqing is a city of 33million people but our purpose in coming here was to board a River cruise ship and sail down the Yangtze. Unlike the swift efficient boarding on ocean cruises we had to drive as near to the ship as we could while floods of people were coming up the road from the ferry. The ship was at the bottom of lots of steps ( China has lots of steps) so we had to hire porters to take our luggage down to the ship. At the security there was an arguement with a family who were apparently carrying something live in their luggage! After walking through one ship to get onto ours which was moored in parallel we were given the key to our Superior Cabin, small but room enough for ... read more

Geo: 29.5591, 106.518Today was another great day... well, until about 10pm but we'll get to that later. This morning I was awake SUPER EARLY so I took a shower and got our bags packed to leave the cruise while Kamie snored. He still has a fairly bad cold but he's trooping along. We finally arrived in the massive city of Chongquing around 3am but the sites just getting there were amazing. Chongquing is one of the largest cities in China and in the world. The entire city consists of skycraper apartment buildings and manufacturing plants. It is good to do business along the river because then you can easily ship the items away. Most Suzuki parts are made here. Chongquing is famous for several political and other reasons but the Chinese people call it the "HOT" ... read more
