Yes, I'm on the road. Sunday I left Huhehaote after having lived there for almost a year with a happy and a sad eye. The last few days were quite hectic, although that's not really true because I just couldn't start packing ahead of time. Taking pictures off your wall seems so definite and all of a sudden you don't feel at home anymore in your own room. So I left that until last, also I had to work until Saturday 9 pm which made the actual leaving really quick. We did, though, have a little party and a great night out a bit ahead of my departure.
Anyway, here I am now on the road. First stop Beijing. My travel partner is delayed so I have some time to do the sightseeing I have always meant to do but never quite managed the times I have visited Beijing before.
Yesterday, first stop the Olympic park. I went there by subway which was almost empty, not many people seemed to be out there to see it... it felt a bit spooky being almost alone in the subway in a city of approximately 17 million people. I went to the last stop
of subway line 8, the Forest park. Getting out of the station I was stunned by the beauty of it, all you could see were hills, covered with trees in bright autumn colours, a nice little lake and rolling hills. So, before visiting the famous and world renown Bird's Nest and Watercube I went for a long, relaxing walk through the park, enjoying the lovely warm autumn sun and weather, contemplating, realising that now I am an unemployed traveller.
There were not many people at all in the forest park apart from local older fellows that went for walks meeting their friends, exercising a bit to keep them fit. All one could hear were birds singing, leaves rustling, people chattering and water flowing. Of course, this being China, you get the odd couple that has to play music on their radio phones disturbing the quiet peacefulness that to them must feel alien.
Eventually though in the late afternoon sun I made my way to the major sights the Bird's Nest and the Watercube where a lot more people were around, getting excited, having pictures taken of themselves in front of Beijings new landmarks. Although being the capital and much more
used to foreigners than other places, you still realise you are in China when people ask you to have a picture taken with them for their photo albums.
Today, another major sight in Beijing, the Summer Palace. After having seen a lot of temples and Chinese architectures and being so to say "templed out" the Summer Palace meets the expectations of one of "the" places to see in China. Again, I went by subway, entering the park at its South gate. I walked around the quiet park just as I did the day before enjoying the warming rays of the weakening autumn sun, watching the locals doing exercise, dancing and chattering. I had some lunch in "Suzhou Road" chatting myself to Søren fra Denmark. Again the park seemed to get busier in the afternoon but the reason for that might be me, leaving the main attractions for last. Another nice day out leaving me with a still hot face from all that fresh chilly autumn air, aching legs and exhaustion but the great feeling of being out having had some physical exercise.
gefaerbten Baeumen hinter einen kleinen See.

Summer Palace & Olympic Park
Funny, I did the same in the other order when I was in Beijing, Summer Palace very early in the morning (nobody there, bliss) and then the Olympic Park... Only I could not even come close to the Stadiums as every single path was barred with dozens of worker on it... Oh, how much I love the summer palace... Can you talk with Mister Hu and ask him to bring the Palace to Europe for a while, so I can have a walk in there again? :)
