The Ming Tombs

The Ming Tombs are located just outside Beijing. Strangely enough nowhere near the metro station with the same name

Each one of the tombs is the size of a palace with a large park around it.

They really spent a lot of money on these tombs. Even the stairs were lavishly decorated

Symbolic urns

These urns stands at the Dingling Tomb. They probably have a symbolic meaning. I think so because I saw similar urs urns when I many years ago visited one of the ten Ming tombs which are not open to the public

The underground vault

The underground vaults are so well hidden that it is difficult to find the entrance even if they decide to excavate the site. They actually got lucky when they found the way into Dingling Tomb which you see here

The emperors are buried in a sealed underground vault. In the burial chamber there are often the remains of a couple of wives and possibly a servant or two and also large amounts of gold, jade and precious stones.

The ground is flat. It doesn't look like it is when you see the photo but that is an optical illusion.

The elevated walkway

The temples and the altars are nice but my favorite is actually something else - an elevated walkway which runs between the main sites. It is long and wide and when you walk on it you see fabulous imperial architectural gems in either end of it

Beijing
You packed so much in for your mother to see in Beijing Ake. Something a good son does I gather. Hope she was not too exhausted to take it all in!!!

The Long Corridor

So many amazing sites!
And of course, I loved this corridor/tunnel one that is so characteristic of you. What a great son to be a tour guide for your mom! Like China, these sites are bigger than life, and so beautiful! I especially liked your story of bribing that guard--I have the feeling that a lot of clever tourists have done this. I'll remember it if I ever get to China!
