This morning we had our first Chinese breakfast, and it was quite spectacular. Besides tea, coffee, cereal, milk, and juices, we had baby bok choi, orange and purple sweet potatoes, congee rice (like po rridge), edamame, kimchi, seaweed salad, something like French toast, spring rolls, watermelon, and grapes. We feel surprisingly energetic given the time shift and managed to make our bodies sleep a few hours between 1 and 6 a.m. (p.m. At home). Our first tour destination was Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I always like the first venture out in a country, when everything looks strange and new. Here we notice the large number of bikes on the road as well as the great variety in their shapes and sizes. Bikes towing carts, bikes with second seats, bikes completely enclosed in glass and ... read more

Clark and Georgie and Mum kindly brought us to the airport in Portland after lunch at Skipper's in Saco. We turned down the offer of a Chinese buffet at this point. The airport was basically empty - one of the great features of flying from Maine! There were 2 people in the security line ahead of us. Our first leg to Detroit left on time about 4:30 p.m., and leaving from Portland we could see Saco Bay, followed by Lake Winnepesaukee (Moultonborough, Center Harbor, and Meredith) and White River Junction and Dartmouth. It briefly entered my mind to wonder if this was the proverbial "life flashing before my eyes," but it was definitely a pleasant experience. Patches of red announced the beginning of fall. Soon we were in Detroit for a three-hour layover. For our last ... read more

Arrived today in Beijing after a 10 hour overnight train from Wuhan. Spent the remainder of the day exploring the hutong around my hotel, the Xiao Yuan Alley Hotel in the Lishi Hutong in the Dongcheng neighborhood East of the Forbidden City. Also walked down what was once the biggest modern shopping street in town, Wangfujing. It's still important and home to the night market and snack street, but there are bigger malls and shopping districts now in other parts of Beijing.... read more

This weekend was very productive in the way of seeing some tourist hot-spots. We had one of our long weekends, so we were able to leave for Beijing on Thursday morning, as opposed to Friday night. Friday, we got a bit of a late start, so we didn’t want to go to any attractions that had a closing time. Thus, we did the entrance to the Forbidden City and Tian An Men Square. The entrance to the Forbidden City is so imposing! The walls are so high, which is good when you want to keep out invaders. There’s also a giant picture of Mao when you are walking in, which makes a great photo opportunity. Then we walked over to Tian An Men square. The area is so nice! The square is much bigger than I ... read more

Hello out there! The past two weeks have been all about getting used to living in Beijing! After our Silk Road Trip we had about two days to get re-settled (get food, toiletries, and school supplies) before our classes started! The Beijing Center held a reception for all of the students (about 60 of us) to meet all of the faculty. We introduced ourselves to our professors and some of mine immediately gave me reading to do for the following day! Four out of five of my teachers are native Chinese citizens that went to school in the United States. They know enough English to teach the class but that doesn't mean we can understand them all of the time! One of my favorite classes is Buddhism which is held once a week from 7:30-10:15 at ... read more

Thursday 13th September Was picked up from my hotel by my organised tour guide at 6:45am and was off to see the Summer Palace, Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. After a couple of pickups of other tourists we headed out to a glorious blue sky and sun. First stop Summer Palace. I won't go into the history or things to see but was a worthwhile trip. Next stop was a tour of a fresh water pearl shop. Obviously these additional stops were used to give the tour guide and driver commission on anything sold. So after being shown the different between a fresh water oyster and an ocean oyster (fresh water holds at least 20 to 30 pearls where as the ocean oyster only has 1) we headed to lunch at a local Chinese ... read more

Nous sommes ... read more

Vuur vuur!

Hey guys!! I'm reallly sorry for lack of contact so far! We have been immersing ourselves in Chinese life and getting on the internet here is such a ma fan (new Chinese word we picked up, helll yes we're speaking Chinese! It means a hassel)! So now you know we didn't die on the way here, although we were pretty close after 27 hours of travel.. Our knees were destroyed from sitting on the plane, but we made friends with our first travel buddy who was in fact Chinese although spoke Queen's English. He was called Zin. I told him he sounds like a Tekken 3 character. He may not have been so impressed with that.. ANYWAY! So China!! Brief overview of things we've been up to: Tiananmen Square and Forbidden City!!! Absolutely incredible! The square ... read more

So we just got back from a 7 day vacation through Xi'an and Beijing. Both cities were a lot more commercial and industrial than Chengdu. Xi'an was not my favorite place so far, the hostel was super fun and we met a ton of people from all different countries that were our age, but the city didn't have too many major attractions. The shopping was excellent though, and I had to stop myself from buying the seven puppies for sale on the side of the road. We took a 17 hour train to Xi'an which was an experience to say the least. Each train car is set up with rows of triple bunk beds, and we had the bottom bunks. We spent the next 17 hours with questionable people sitting on our beds and a very ... read more
