Now 2 weeks into my 5th China trip; the 4th to teach at HUST in Wuhan. Arrived in Beijing, returning to the Xiao Yuan Alley Courtyard Hotel in Liji hutong the heart of Dongzhimen, just east of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I stayed in Xiao Yuan my last stay in Beijing and so it was a comfortable return visit. Beijing has become an expensive city, especially during peak summer travel months. The Xiao Yuan is perfectly located, easily accessible by subway just one stop from the terminus of the line from Beijing Airport into the city. There are some great, small restaurants nearby serving Beijing cuisine as well as food from many other parts of China. This return trip to Beijing en route to Wuhan was primarily to reconnect with my first TA from ... read more

I’m back on my travels again – Yippee! I went home to Ireland for five weeks during the Spring Festival holiday in China. It was very rainy and windy most of the time and has since been declared the wettest winter on record in Ireland. At least China is dry during the winter and has very little wind.I flew from Dublin to Amsterdam en route to Beijing. When I handed the KLM official my boarding pass at the boarding gate in Amsterdam, she said, “Wait a minute” and off she went to the computer. She returned with a new boarding pass and said, “You are getting a free upgrade to Business Class for the flight to Beijing.” Wow! I was delighted because in all my travels I have never flown Business Class. Of course I took ... read more

My brother said, “I guess it’s too bad you’re in Beijing at this time, no decorations to get you into the Christmas spirit.” I laughed, “Are you kidding? Nobody does bling like the Chinese. The Christmas decorations are great. The outdoor displays at shopping centres are huge and colourful!" I hope my photos capture the bling. While I have you captive, maybe I'll tell you something about winter in Beijing. It snowed about a week ago and it was amazing to see so many people out sweeping the sidewalks. I heard that seniors are told that if they come out early in the morning and sweep, they will be paid maybe €1/$1 for a few hours work. I appreciate their work because they make it safe for pedestrains to walk when the streets and sidewalks are ... read more

A little bit outside the general tourist loop, the 798 Art District is now one of my favorite places in Beijing. The area used to be a series of military factories, but after the factories closed down contemporary artists set-up shop in the vacant spaces. The entire area has a really great low-key vibe that I find western and trendy. The buildings have also been modified or at least obscured by sculptures and trees, so you don't feel like you are walking into a defunct military factory complex. Artists have also placed sculptures along the road, so there is always something eye catching to look at. As you walk down the main road, you can turn onto any of the side streets and go look through some small galeries or happen upon a peaceful courtyard. The ... read more

Hi Everyone, I really must apologise for taking such a long break from this blog. The problem is that I am having so much fun living in Beijing. I never imagined that there would be so much to do year-round. I have a weekly two-hour one-to-one Mandarin class, plus a taije class once or twice a week. Almost every week, sometimes even twice, I go to Chinese films in one of three or four venues that play films made by Chines directors, not Hollywood-style, with subtitles in Mandarin and English and often a Q/A afterwards with the director. On the weekends when I’m not travelling I go hiking to the mountains and villages outside Beijing with the Beijing Hikers or the Culture Yard. I’ve also made a real effort to visit some of the popular tourist ... read more

Hi again. OK, it seems the blog decided my last post was not very good and lost it in cyberspace. Just a few snaps from my walk on the weekend. I was heading to the drum tower... I did not find it. Worked out I turned around 1 block to early :o( Ive included a snap to show how much the air quality suffers here when the wind stops blowing. The photo here is less than 24 hours without wind. Last week, it went 3 days.. and you could not see more than 100 meters. Ive set a new record.. nearly got run over by 7 different modes of transport :o) Crossing the road here is an adventure. Till next blog, C ya :o)... read more

OK.. I have to get better at doing this blogging stuff.. so here goes... As for the heading... Beijing is a big, busy place. Yeah, I know, chronic understatement. Think of it as the whole population of Australia living in one big city. And with so many people all in the same spot, there just seems to be more people than space sometimes. But the place where it is most evident is on the roads. Yesterday, I found myself stuck in Gridlock traffic, kilometers away from the center of Beijing at 3:30 on a Saturday afternoon. The only time you may experience that back home is if you are leaving a major event (ie. concert, sporting event etc...) but this was just a normal sleepy Saturday in China. It was while I sat in the traffic ... read more

Well, It was great to see Chinese New Year, but boy am I glad that is all over! In truth, the New year only last for 1 week, but unofficially, the fireworks continue for another week. It has been amazing to see, the night sky awash with fireworks... but it really plays havoc with the sllep patterns. The fireworks have to be loud, to scare away the demons, devils or whatever.. and they go all night. So, I have not been getting much sleep. :o( On the work front, we have no relocated to the permanant office, which is nicer than the temporary place we were at. I have a lot to do here, training over a dozen people to perform a challenging role, and I only have a matter of weeks to do so. This ... read more

Hi folks.. Survived the first day at the office.. Its going to hurt working these hours until I get used to it. And there are a few things I am going to have to work on getting accustomed to. Pets in the hotel... Not used to seeing dogs and cats in the lift. Road laws... There aren't any Keanu Reeves... Living next door (Yep.. He's here filming a movie living in the same apartments as I am) Dairy Products... What the??? Dont seem to exist here. Im stuck with that horrible powdered creamer crap in my coffee... :o( Bread... see above Firworks... Chinese New year last week, and the local have only this week to use any left overs before they are banned for another 50 weeks. Each night, it sounds like a war going on ... read more
