Guilt! I have had this feeling of guilt since arriving back from the wedding in Australia. Why? For various reasons, all of them trivial. Now before I go on to tell my story, let me start of by saying that guilt is a big thing in my family. We are all comfortably endowed with a guilty conscience about anything and anybody, it is in our genes. Returning to Guangzhou I had made all these plans, I was going to visit such and such places of interest around the city. But instead of doing any of that I just stayed in the hostel and lounged in the common area talking to other travellers, Chinese and Western alike and sipping beers in the evening. For two days I did nothing and then left without ever having done any ... read more

I had been looking forward to visiting Huangshan (otherwise known as yellow mountains) for a long time - ever since we moved to Shanghai and the previous tennents of our flat told us about them (and we then subsequently googled them!). The easiest way to get there is by bus so Emily, Alex, Sam and I set off on the 5-6 hr journey late in the morning with the plan to arrive there and climb up the mountain in the early evening to stay up there overnight. The bus ride was interesting as you got closer to Huangshan you were driving down a neat little valley surrounded by hills and rice paddys. The hills and paddys are incredibly well maintained (like most gardens are across China) and covered in yellow flowers - I thought that this ... read more

Being the travel junkies we are – we love exploring new places and cultures and China has been a great place to do this. Every free minute we have – we have been out wandering the city or making small trips to nearby cities. This has made our lives a bit crazy at times, but it’s a small price to pay for the experiences we’ve been having. I intro with this because this blog begins a wild 3 week travel /work trip. First stop.. Huangshan. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain in English) is a mountain range in Anhui province that is very well known for its scenery and sharp jutted granite peaks. We had been talking about making the trip for quite some time, however, the trip required a full 3 days and we just hadn’t found the ... read more

In China there is a famous proverb. It says if you visit Huang Shan (Yellow Mountain), there is no need to visit another Chinese mountain. Many tourist destinations in China come with similar bold statements. ‘He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man’ is another. Catching the train from Nanjing, I was intrigued to see if there was any truth in these words. Sometimes I wish I would re-evaluate my policy of choosing the cheapest options available every time. Instead of travelling to Huang Shan in comfort and style for a few pence more, the penny-pincher mentality saw me purchasing tickets for possibly the slowest train on the entire rail network. Leaving at 5am in freezing conditions and lacking any heating inside, the 340km distance took over nine hours to ... read more

The famous scrolls of chinese black and white paintings of high mountains, rocks, trees and sea of clouds come alive in huangshan mountains in the south anhui province. It is a marvelous mountain area, now on the UNESCO World cultural and natural heritage list. there is an old saying well known throughout the country “no need to see any other mountains after huangshan!” Huangshan has spectacular landscape with its four unique scenes: interesting shaped rocks, waterfalls, unique shaped pine trees growing out of rocks, and its sea of clouds. huangshan has it all, the steepness, the grace, the elegance, and so on. There a specific Chinese saying which goes “五岳归来不看山,黄山归来不看岳”. It means basically there are 5 top famous mountains in China. There is no other need to view the other mountains in China if one has ... read more

Every once in a while on this trip we have a couple of days where everything goes just right. Tunxi (Huangshan City) was one of those places. After a pleasant 3 hour bus ride from Hangzhou, we found our way to our hotel with relative ease and soon after had our onward train tickets booked. The city of Tunxi brought us back to that small city feel that we've been missing the last little while where we could eat in small corner restaurants with big portions, cheap beer and awesome home-style chinese food. The reason that most people stay in Tunxi is to use it as a base to climb Mount Huangshan which is one of the most sacred Taoist peaks. Having already climbed Hua Shan near Xian, we opted instead to spend a day exploring ... read more

We ventured to our 12th province in China or should I be Chinese politically correct and say "We have traveled to 2 municipalities, 7 provinces, 1 autonomous region, 2 special districts(Hong Kong SAR & Macau SAR) and Taiwan. When I typed into Google search "How many provinces are in China?" this is the answer from Wiki answers == All together there are 34 province-level administrative units in China, including 4 municipalities, 22 Provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 2 special districts, and Taiwan, which is claimed as a province but is not currently under the administration of the People's Republic of China. Complicated China Huangshan translates to Yellow(huang) Mountain(shan) Its that time of year again when all the schools in China take a few days off of teaching and have a field... read more

This past weekend I went to Huang Shan (the yellow mountain) and Huizhou in the southern part of Anhui with Peter. Every Chinese person I’ve ever met has advised me to go to this mountain. It is the gem of the Anhui province I suppose. Friday we took a 5-hour train down to Huang Shan Shi, a town about an hour bus ride away from the base of the mountain. We got to the hostel at about one a.m. and I realized I had forgotten my passport. The hostel attendant then said to follow him and I didn’t really understand where we were going. We walked up to the local police station where 3 officers sat at a table eating greasy take out. The attendant and officer exchanged some words I didn’t understand with ‘hu jiao’ ... read more

Our journey has taken us further east to Tunxi. Surrounded by mountains and rivers, with tea shops on every corner and tea plants in every field the slower pace of life has been a welcome change and has given us the opportunity to explore the beautiful villages of the region. Of Particular note is Hongcun - which is famed for its unique irrigation system - while I know little of irrigation in practice it means that every street had a carved channel for water running down the side of the houses. Residents wash their clothes and their dishes alongside the ducks that vie for space. While there may be fewer ducks, the temples scatterered throughout red sandstone peaks makes Qiyun Shan, the mountain residence of taoists monks worth a mention. With all these places to see ... read more
