I will start with a notice that I read today at the reception desk which seems to sum up the Cambodian attitude to life.
"It doesn't matter if things are good or bad they will change".
We have been working out on the project everyday and the place is really starting to come together, these people waste nothing even the empty water bottles are collected by the children and then resold. But their use of available materials is ingenious and extremely practical, the last 2 days we have been splitting bamboo (a very valuable skill to know, well I think so anyway) and making walls out of it and palm leaves. These walls last about 3 years and are an incredibly effective insulator and excellent at keeping the rain out and they can be made to whatever size you require.
Had a nice moment on the trip back today, I was in the Tuk Tuk with Ghan who is the oldest local on the project and is like a Foreman. I went to put my MP3 player on and asked if he would like to hear what I was listening to, he nodded so he grabbed one ear plug and I had the other and we spent the whole trip home listening to hard core trance music which he really liked and was even bopping away to, it seems Lego-head has a new fan.
Last night I went out for a walk and just down from where I am staying on the side of the road was a man selling his wares, which is not unusual there are people everywhere selling stuff but this guy was selling fried bugs, crickets, Beatles and the biggest cockroaches I have ever seen. I'm not sure what the going rate was but they are measured out using an empty can. Food is definitely viewed in a totally different light here, I went to a restaurant the other night where you could order live Prawn soup, yep they make the soup and give a bowl of live prawns that you add at your leisure, or you can go to the market and get yourself some turtle or fruit bat. The men that we work with stop at the same roadside stall every day and but live fish which they give to the woman who we are making the house for and she cooks up breakfast for them, the fish is never gutted just chopped up and if they buy small fish they are cooked and eaten whole, bones and all.
Bon Appitite..
PS Im still having a huge amount of trouble trying to attatch photos to this blog, please be patient Im sure I will sort it out eventually.
