After having spent over a week in Bangkok, Chantaburi and Koh Chang, I decided to leap on the Cambodian side from Pailin. I took a bus to Chantaburi and then asked several times from the bus station staff how to get to Ban Paggard/Pailin border without a tuk-tuk taxi. They all said there are no buses..but I explained I could change the bus...ok then one guy told me where I could jump off and change the bus. Meanwhile I went to eat rice vermicelli soup..but after taking the first mouthful it tasted like spearmint bubblegum..wonder if it was done by mischievous kids or just someone accidentally dropped the gum to the soup. Today we were heading to Cambodia. Another 6am start and leave the hotel by 6.40am ! We then caught our speedboat which would take us up the Mekong river and to get our visas stamped for cambodia. The actual border place is by the river. We had to queue for quite a while in very hot temperatures but we all got through ok. Then back on the boat for about another 3 hours to reach Phnom Penh in Cambodia. We arrived around lunch time and went to the foreign correspondents club for lunch, it was a bit hurried as time was sailing (excuse the pun) by and we had the option of either going to the genocide museum or the killing fields. Pailin is famous for gem stones, land mines and being a haven for ex-Khmer Rouge members. In the west of Cambodia, near the Thai border, Pailin was a Khmer Rouge stronghold; selling gem stones kept them going financially, they planted a lot of land mines here to compensate for having a smaller army than opposing forces, and a number of high ranking Khmer Rouge members sought refuge in Pailin after they were finally defeated in the late nineties. I saw some gem stones (some really big rocks!), read signs about land mine clearances and saw some land mine victims, but fortunately didn't have any encounters with any ex-Khmer Rouge members...as far as I know!
