I have now settled into a sort of routine for weekdays. Not a lot happens in the mornings as most of the orphanage children are at school. The organisation (NFO) supports a number of other teaching projects as well as running the orphanage, and the main two of this happen in the early afternoon. One is the "monks' English class" that I have now taken over in Takeo town centre, and the other is helping with English lessons in a rural village school a few miles outside Takeo. After these lessons the volunteers then normally go over to the orphanage to spend the rest of the afternoon with the children, either doing some English lessons or more commonly just chatting to the kids or playing games or sports with them. This goes on until sometime after ... read more

I had no problems on the flights and finally arrived in Phnom Penh which is 6 hours ahead of BST. I was very impressed with Incheon airport in Seoul, South Korea, where I had to change flights. Phnom Penh airport was also much better organised than I had anticipated, well certainly better than Kathmandu and Accra. Getting a visa on arrival was very straight forward, you just need one passport photo and 20 dollars in cash. The currency in Cambodia is the Cambodian Real (currently about 6000 reals for one pound sterling) but US dollars are effectively a second parallel currency here and just about everywhere happily accepts either. I finally arrived at my hotel in Phnom Penh at about midnight local time, 20 hours after leaving home. I had a short walk outside then went ... read more

Soo I’ve come to the end of my time in the village.. To live in the countryside with the teachers and the students was a beautiful experience.. and it’s them that I will remember for a long time. The baking heat and torrential rain added to the difficulties but it made even more rewarding. I want to thank the organization for allowing me this opportunity from which I gained the confidence to feel I could teach and it was the interest and gratefulness of the young people I taught that gave it to me. On my last day I took the students on a trip to Phnom Da a temple on a hill surrounded by flooded rice pains built in the 6th century. It was only a couple of hours away but from the excitement of ... read more

It is about 7 in the morning, finally one good night sleep! Woke up an hour ago, or so, by the sound of the garden cockerel. Oh, shut up and give me another couple of hours sleep! It is not going to happen, is it! Oh well...may as well get up then. When I collapsed in bed last night I was exhausted. The previous night had not been pleasurable, hot and humid air added to the infamous spider fear, forced me to spend most of the nightly hours awake, reading and trying to convince myself that I was too tired to go on with this book, to just give in and go to sleep - easier said than done! I did finally got some hours sleep in the early morning, but was abruptly waken by the ... read more

Returning to Cambodia was like opening a long lost book. A book cherished and missed, one where you don’t want to let go of any of the characters, where you want the journey to simply continue, forever. All of a sudden my book has reappeared and somehow, two and a half year later all the familiar emotions of past times come flooding back. A few characters have been left behind (travel is not the same without you sweetheart), some, like me dear Totla, I hope to be reunited with and new once are soon to be greeted. Let the journey begin, or should I say continue! I had had trouble relating to the fact that I was finally returning. Towards every holiday, and as a student we have plenty of them, I have dreamt and planned ... read more

iSo far, so good... Well, I've been back and working at the school for over a month and everything’s falling back into place and I’m really getting back into the rhythm of things... and I now get to ride the moto to school and back two times a day which is always fun! the main road with all the house's on we call hello road as every single child run out of their house shouting hello at me as i ride past. A description of my day?? 5.30am usually get woken up at by the chickens or at 6am by the wedding / funeral it’s very hard to tell the difference as they both hire the biggest speakers you can get then chant, pray and play local music and drum and bass at full volume for ... read more

I arrived and have been volunteering at the New Futures Orphanage in Takeo for a week and a half now. I've been absolutely loving it! The kids are hilarious and great fun to be around. There are 50 of them in total ranging from 6 years old up to 18. I'm staying at a local guesthouse which is $5 a night for a room with your own bathroom and a fan which is pretty awesome value! There is also a centre type building where you have breakfast and dinner that two girls cook each night. The food is really good especially the Khmer curry and the stir fried tofu and beansprouts and for $2.50 for dinner and $1.50 for breakfast you can't go wrong!! During the day we usually pop 50 metres down the track to ... read more

The Children of Wat Opot --- The Angels of Wat Opot ----- They have amazing strength, they are much more stronger than any of us. I went to Wat Opot to help out but really.. they helped me. My experience there was life changing, truly humbling and a real eye opener. The pain and suffering that these children have been through and are still going through is nothing compared to what we seem as 'pain & suffering'. Who am i to complain about my so called "hard" life. You never hear any complaints from these children, they have accepted, they are learning, they are laughing, loving and moving forward. To some of us.. this is hard to do. The Children of Wat Opot are happy, full of energy.... its infectious. I love being around them. The ... read more
