The whole gang
The family who lived and worked at the shack are the ones on the right if you hadn't already guessed After the great relaxing atmosphere in Phnom Pehn Juan, Mark and I decided that we needed even more relaxation so in true form we headed of to the southern coast of Cambodia to a little place called Silhanoukville. We had heard that it was possible to get free accommodation on the beach but we were all a little unsure to whether the rumor was true or not, luckily it did turn out to be correct and we managed to book into a place for free as long as we had a least 2 meals a day at the bar. The prices of the drinks and food was slightly inflated to make up for the free accommodation but we couldn’t complain as we had everything we needed right there- bed, bar, food, pool table, beach, sea, those really comfortable chairs and free sun loungers.
That evening we had a walk around the area which is not that big but did find a bar that was giving away free shots via a block of ice. A huge block of ice was set on a slant with a groove cut in it and you positioned yourself and the lower end and the
shot was tipped at the top of the groove and just flowed into your mouth and was lovely and chilled by that time. At this bar we also managed to bump into Colin and Andrea which was great as we new there where here but not sure where they were staying, so by the time that we had told them we were in free accommodation right on the beach they moved down the following day, this actually happened with a few people. By the end of the third day our every expanding group was taking up ¾ of the guesthouse.
I have to say that with out doubt, up to this point this has been the best place I have ever been to. Every morning started with a lazy lie-in and the walking like a zoobie to the sea for a swim to wake up (usually suffering from the night before) then go a sit on the beach and have some breakfast. The day would then consist of sunbathing, reading, playing pool, swimming and sleeping- oh so hard!!! By the evening we would take a stroll down the beach to this great restaurant that sold a selection of fresh
Our shack
This place had everything you could ever want within 50 steps of my room! fish. So I think for 5 days on the trot I ended up having these huge red snapper fish (about 14inchs nose to tail) cooked right there on the beach!! Anyone that knows me knows that I love fish, but when they are the best fish I have ever tasted and cost 3 US dollars each I would have been a fool to pass up on the opportunity. Everyday I said I will definitely have something different today but every time I got to the restaurant I just had to order those succulent fresh fish, they just tasted SO good!
The beach was pretty nice but unfortunately there was a quite a bit of rubbish around because as we have found out the Cambodians really don’t mind where there rubbish goes, but if you looked over that it was lovely and the water was so warm you could just walk straight in with out a loss of breath or having to do the tiptoe thing (you know what I mean boys)!!
The other funny sight was that occasionally we would all be sat around chatting and relaxing and suddenly our local friendly cow would stroll down the beach lapping
Mark and his lobster
Hasn't anyone told him not to play with his food up the surf of the sea, not the usual thing you see when being at the beach but well funny.
I’m not sure what was better the beach and area or the people I was with but I know for sure that without both of them I would never had of enjoyed it as much.
We did however get barred from drinking at one bar a couple of nights before we had all gone there as they were advertised unlimited free shots! All 13 of us headed down to the bar order a beer and then started playing many drinking games, mainly the ‘moose game’ which is great fun but gets you drunk really quickly. Shortly after getting there we realized we were going though these shots far too fast and spending precious time at the bar ordering our shots so we managed to get these huge jugs filled with the juice they were putting in the shots. So I think after a few hours here and about 8-10 of the huge jugs later we all ended up swimming around in the sea. It was amazing as I have never swam in the sea at night before, the
Ummm!! fresh lobster while you sunbath
I had never tried these small lobster before they taste fantastic sea was so warm and clam and although the moon gave of a lot of light if you walked/swam more than 20 feet you couldn’t see the person next to you, but luckily you could always see the lights from the bar to guild you back to the beach.
So be because of the amount that we had drunk the previous night the bar owner barred us having any free shots the following evening which I can sort of understand, it was just a shame he was so rude about it thou.
When it finally came to leave we were all so sad, we all came to really fall in love with the place, it has really been the most memorable places of my whole trip. I just can’t explain how amazing I found silhaunokville we had only intended to stay 2-3 days and ended up being there 8 as none of us could bring ourselves to leave, it was our own little paradise that I will never forget.
