As a self-promise, I headed back to Kampong Speu, leading a team of individual volunteers this time, on the Water for Life programme under Singapore International Foundation. It felt great to be back, especially being able to meet up with old friends, and to contribute in a meaningful way. For me, it seems like a yearly retreat back into the kampong! I never felt more refreshed to be away from the bustling city, into the farms and villages where simplicity (and mosquitos!) fills the air. This trip was slightly different due to changes in the programme compared to the previous ones. Besides doing the routine manufacturing and installation of water filters in the villages, we also did a hygiene programme in the local primary school. For details on installation of water filter, refer to: http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Cambodia/South/Kampong-Speu/blog-762535.html We ... read more

Back in Kampong Speu, and have discovered much more than when I first did. Well, definitely not a tourist destination with barely any locals having the command of English. It a really nice location for an away-from-the-city spot, and if one wants to come here to be involved with community work, there is always the Karuna hospitality school (or guesthouse) where one can have overnight stays with wifi. Collaborating with Sao Sary Foundation (SSF) together with SIF, we did a total of 19 water filters and made some progress to the latrine construction. More so, I have learnt much deeper about the Non-government-organization (NGO) than I did previously. Had the chance to talk to the Singapore representative (and it happens that there is another Singaporean group here as well!) to find out much about the community ... read more

Hello, Wow, so I've been here for two weeks already. We've had some really good music sessions so far and they are enjoying it. Unfortunately this week I've come down with tonsilitous which isn't great for the singing! but we've got some good rhythms going on. I've settled in more now having got used to the surroundings and how things work here. Yesterday was heart-renching. There's a little boy who arrived this week. He is probably about 2 years old. His mother is very ill with (she's HIV+) and couldn't take care of him so he came here. He is HIV+ too but they are now both on medication. She's gone back to her home and we're hoping that she'll build up strength and at some point they'll be able to be reunited. But the boy ... read more

Hello. Well, I've arrived. After a long journey and managing to persuade the airport not to charge me too much for the excess baggage, I arrived. Took a little longer to track down my baggage but it got here only a day late. The children's village is wonderful. Each family has a house, and the houses are built in clusters of 3 with a kitchen and eating area. Each cluster is painted a different colour making the village nice and colourful. They have just had a basketball court put in right in the middle of the village! And just the day I arrived they had some playground equipment put in, so the children have been playing none stop. As soon as I arrived I had kids hugging me around the legs. They LOVE hugging! Especially the ... read more
