Angkor Wat was built in the early to mid 12th century as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. It is surrounded by a moat and an exterior wall measuring 1300 meters by 1500 meters. The temple itself is 1 km square, with three levels and a central tower. The exterior walls of the lower level of the temple are covered with relief drawings depicted Hindu mythology. This is the temple that the tourists seemed everywhere. It was packed. At one point they had a huge line to get down the safe wood stairway that was constructed. We just opted to do it the old fashioned way and climb down the monstrous stone stairs.
