Today has been one of the oddest days yet and it's not like you can put your finger on what made it odd. It was just a feeling, that is until things started going wrong.....
It started like every other day. Up early and gathering our ever filthy gear, dealing with water things and then down the road we go...Mombo follows us on his moto or is almost always in sight, he carries a cooler filled with all sorts of things we've found helpful. Gatorade of course, Arizona tea and Nescafe from packets and of course bananas! We were on a nice stretch of road and realized we'd not seen him in about half an hour and we were about to call when he came up. We were about to give him a bit of grief until we found out he'd crashed! He was not injured but his moto took it a bit harder. All safe we continued on....
We've made jokes about Nathalie getting her rabies shots last year and that she would be sacrificed to the dogs should the need arise. We'd also figured that given enough time, we would run into a dog that decided it
was worth the risk and have a go at us. We've had a couple close calls but today it happened and Nathalie got bit on the leg. Luckily for all of us, it did not puncture the skin, only a surface scratch but doing her best triage doctor impression, Nat hauled out all the first aid and gave it a good scrub, added triple antibiotic cream and covered it with a bandage. While all this was going on, we became the topic of the morning and Bunna and Mombo got to practice crowd control.
Everything dealt with we headed on our way again....once more on a lovely dusty road that became more like a technical trail run, Jeff did his best to do his part for roadside maintenance and remove a very large and securely stuck in the ground, boulder, with his foot. Well the rock did not budge and Jeff is now the proud owner of a banged up leg that only hurts when he walk or runs....
Finally it was time for lunch and we found a nice little spot off the road where we would not be dusted to death while eating our rice and
egg....Speaking of egg...Mombo had finished his lunch and was still hungry. Fortunately for him, Bunna noticed a small egg on the ground, sitting in the blazing sun. It was only a bit cracked...When he handed it to Mombo, he cracked it open a bit and took a sniff. It's fresh was his comment and we expected him to toss it away. Nope, he cracked it open a bit more and in a very practiced move, just sucked every last bit of rawness out of the shell! Not sure whether it was surprise or shock but dumbfounded was what we were! In the end it turns out that the egg actually was the breakfast of one of the kids who was hanging around watching us eat lunch. Seems he'd left it in the sun to 'dry' and forgot about it when we arrived. Guess you should not leave your breakfast unattended while Mombo is around!
The day continued as they do and we made a plan to get ahead of the mileage since we would be staying in a 'guesthouse', in this case we'd be 'guests in someone's house' . Running for a couple more hours seemed only slightly more
work than being the proverbial goldfish in a bowl for another village's amusement so down the dusty road we continued...In the end though the dust won out and we called it a day and decided our health was more important and the mileage (we were 44km in) and agreed on a reroute for tomorrow's course.....
