We decided to include Kalaw in our route to go on trekking. We took the night bus in Hsipaw, the trip of 12 hours was not exactly I expected, uncomfortable and no recliner seat on the bus. Arriving in Kalaw wasn't exactly an adventure, we were dropped in the middle of nowhere at night in the dark dragged our luggage looking our hotel that we booked in advance, without realized if we're in danger or not, thank god Kalaw is known as a safe town. There were four of us getting off the bus, two guys went on different ways. And the bus continued to his final destination in Inle Lake.
We're having difficulty finding the hotel as it's so dark, no light on street. Luckily we meet a man with a motorbike, the whole city is asleep while he is on tour with his moped, it was already 3:00 am. We asked him if he knew Dream Villa Hotel, by coincidence we stood in front of the building. We ring the bell a couple of times, but seems nobody heard, is dark in the surrounding we thought they're all asleep. We ring the telephone number that's on the voucher,
still no answer, back to the doorbell, finally after ten times we saw the light on, a guy saw us standing outside the gate. My gosh what a night.
We can check in to our room without extra charged and sleep for a short while, at 7 in the morning we’re awake still tired, but we need to get up and going outside search for an office. We want to go on one day trek, our host given us some addresses, there are a few in the center so we been to three different office comparing prices. They all have different price each other, they want to know if we want a short or a long walk - as this was our main purpose in Kalaw we prefer the long walk. At the end we went back to the first one and book our one day trekking there. The hike starts at 8:30 in the morning we were just on time for booking. So they pointed us the route of 22 kilometer which was good - price per person is 15.000 kyats with lunch included.
Most tourists visit Kalaw and do a two or three-day trek from here
to Inle Lake, but we haven’t much time. Besides, we done already a one day hike in Hsipaw, so after this hike I think I'll be exhausted. We're ready to go in the mountains, but it was only after seven o'clock so we have time for breakfast and stroll around. Kalaw is more touristy than we expected, comparing to other small towns like: Pyin U Lwin and Hsipaw. The town itself has not much to offer besides a small market and a few temples and the vibes, it is not only the atmosphere that attracts many tourists here, but the impressive mountains, most people coming here to hike.
Exactly 8:30 we went back to the office where we booked the trekking. A young man waited for us, and after introducing ourselves we start walking to the mountain area. Is a tough walk climbed quite a few steep paths walking through the hills, sometimes a beautiful viewpoint. After 4 hour walk we arrived to a village where lunch is served and we pretty much enjoying the beautiful view as well. After lunch we walk further through the green fields and along tea pickers, villages, local minorities, beautiful viewpoints, people who
work on land, children who greet you cheerfully, farm fields, pepper plantations and many more beautiful places. The trek sometimes leads over narrow on steep paths but is generally not very difficult or heavy. In total we hike 22 kilometers this day and were broken.
