As you may recall, Yangon was my first stop on my Myanmar journey, but I left after only one full day because Bagan beckoned. I'm now back in Yangon. What a journey this has been. Arriving Back At Yangon I flew from Mandalay to Yangon on Wednesday, September 20th. As this was my last stop in Myanmar, I decided to splurge a little on a three star hotel. I chose the Hotel Grand United on 21st Stre... Read Full Entry

Train travel and reflections
Trains are our favourite mode of transport when travelling, for all the reasons you mention...you seemed to have got a real sense of local life on that circular train. I enjoyed reading your reflections and it's awesome that you had a great trip. Of all the things you are anxious about, I think you need to really focus on modifying the house for those two more kitties! Kitties make everything better :)

The additional kitties...
Sigh. The elementary school where Jeff teaches had a population explosion of feral kitties. Five kittens landed with us - three were found abandoned and two were snatched by a well-intentioned but misguided sixth grader. We found homes for three of them. Despite our best efforts, and even with the help of a rescue organization, we couldn't find homes for two (it is hard to place black cats). So, while I was away we decided to give up and just take them in. We now have six in a small house. We're now looking into catio designs.

Also in Myanmar
Thanks so much for your blog, Siewch. I am about a month behind you on my travels and doing them in a completely different way. I was a backpacker 30+ years ago but due to limited time and worries of my fitness, I booked it all through an agent. I am loving it all!

Glad to be of help.
Isn’t Myanmar amazing? You’ll learn a lot more with a guide in tow, so there is an upside to traveling that way. I just returned from Cuba where I traveled on a group tour (my first since I was a teenager). I learned a lot more even though I did itch to be out there exploring on my own terms.
