Stepping into Myanmar was like stepping into the distant past. In many ways it reminded us of China in 1983. Yangon has many crumbling images of its colonial past. They eat only 2 meals a day, breakfast and lunch. Both meals are eaten in total silence. Any leftover food they give to the poor. There are over 1000 monks at this monastery.

A very thick layer of thin gold leaf has been applied to this Buddha over many years. Only men are allowed to apply the gold leaf and the face is the only visible portion of the original statue.

The sacred Buddhist scriptures are written on the marble slabs. Our tour book states that it would take a person reading 8 hours a day 420 days to complete the book.
