Ridiculous Mandalay and the Mustache Brothers Mandalay is Baman for “bloody hot place without air-conditioning”. It’s worth noting that nearly all guesthouses have air-conditioners (“as advertised”) but don’t use them because the power is out. Unlike Yangon where the power is reasonably predictable, the power in Mandalay may be off for a couple of days, then on for an hour, then off again. I got a surprise one night when I walked into my room and the aircon was working. “What’s the story?” “A government official is in town tonight.” The senior government officials must think they are pretty popular as everyone in town wants them to stay as long as possible. I asked Lu Zaw about it. Apparently, government officials make money by buying gasoline at official prices and selling it for twice the price ... read more

(Kev) Mandalay was the perfect end to our Burma experience. We left Inle Lake at 5 in the morning and I was not looking forward to another 12-hour bus ride, however as it turned out this one was not so bad. I rode the majority of the ride atop the bus, and was able to enjoy the panorama of the mountains as we made our decent. It was really hot on the roof, but we got splashed with buckets of water every couple of minutes…so the heat was not a problem. Every April from the 13th to 17th the Burmese celebrate their New Year with a water festival, hence my welcomed relief atop the bus. Mandalay was the perfect place to be for the festival, we had not planned it out that way, but our luck ... read more

I'm alive!!! No Internet in Northern Myanmar. Interestingly enough there actually is no Bay in Mandalay. The Vegas Hotel is I guess made up. Lying liars and the lies they tell. (There's a casino in Vegas called Mandalay Bay) Mandalay is hot, dirty, and full of poverty. I only stayed here for 3 days, and though I enjoyed myself, I can easily say this is my least favorite city. I'd have to say the coolest things are the Four Ancient Cities, and the Walls of the Palace (not the pallace), oh and of course the Chapatis place that serves unbelievable indian food. The one thing that really bothers me or should I say effects me in this citty is all the poverty. Example: I saw this lady begging for money in front the nylon ice cream ... read more

Allright, so where the hell is this Mandalay Bay? We're a couple hundred kilometers inland. I asked around and the explanation I got is that there is another Mandalay somewhere in the world with a bay, but I think they're wrong. This is it. So Mandalay sounds like the most wonderfully exotic place ever, but its pretty much a dump. Its dusty and ugly (and when someone from OKC calls a city ugly that is a major BURN am I right? Just kidding, I love ya baby) It's heartbreaking! The power is out the vast majority of the time and as soon as the fan went off in our room we woke up from the heat. We were only there for two days but we spent a considerable amount of time just sitting in our hotel ... read more

It is an awkward night's rest on the top bunk, hopping and rocking the rails from Yangon to the old capital of Mandalay. The monk on the bottom bunk is awake. The doctor lies burrowed under his blanket, snoring. I watch out the window, the sun rise above the Shan mountains. We approach Mandalay three hours behind schedule. The doctor is irate speaking into his mobile, arranging his day and return trip that evening. Taungthaman Lake passes by outside the window. White pagodas rise above the greenery along the far bank where in the distance I can make out the century old U Bein Bridge. Outside the train station I manage to find the oldest trishaw driver and the most rundown trishaw. Every 400m we stop to fix the chain, the seat, the breaks, the chain ... read more

Impressions. City streets filled with the bustling of everyday Burmese life, is this the 2000's or the 1970's? Looking around at the traffic, people, roads, shops it could be either. The only giveaways the occasional electrical store selling DVD players and PA systems. This is an Asian city in concentrate. The essense of south-east asia squeezed and compressed into this little bustling city, given a twist of India and pushed forward in time 40 years. Mandalay lacks the glistening skyscrapers, well dressed mobile tooting middle class, and large shiney SUV's of most other South East Asian cities. The city streets are laid out in a grid system, blocks and numerically numbered streets. It makes it simple to navigate, easy to get lost as the streets and chaos all blurs into one. Upon finally reaching the big city, I somehow feel tricked; for instead of springing into the modernity that metropolises often bring, it seems that I stepped back into a bygone decade. Bus videos censor through the “love scenes,” music videos depict a would-be suitor trying desperately to wrest his young love from her parents’ ever-watchful eye for an innocent handhold, the after-dusk city streets are empty save for the occasional ice cream parlor patrons making their way home. The movie theater is showcasing an American film featuring Angelina Jolie, who might find the plump, size 12 representation of herself on the hand-painted poster marquee somewhat less than flattering - but for the Burmese ideal of an attractive woman, she probably looked like heaven. Ladies of even the most modest means, in their ubiquitous ankle-length skirts and ... read more

There are several locations of interest around Mandalay which can easily be reached in a one-day trip and we of course wanted to see as many of them as possible. We visited four small cities of historical importance, of which three had been capitals of the Burmese kingdom in former centuries. Historical backgroundSagaing became the second Burmese capital around 1315 after the fall of Bagan. Its period of importance was short, for in 1364 the founder's grandson moved his capital across the river to Ava. From 1760 to 1764 Sagaing was once again the capital. Moving entire capitals is a tradition in Burma; the most important Burmese town of the northern Ayeyarwady (formerly known as the Irrawaddy) valley had for a long time been the town of Ava, founded in 1364. But in 1782 the town ... read more

From the geographical point of view, we were already quite close to southern Myanmar on Kho Phi Phi, but we could not find out whether it was possible to cross the border there, since information on Myanmar is very difficult to come by. For this reason, Myanmar has been a stumbling block of our travel itinerary since the very beginning. We originally planned to start there and cross over to India, but most of Myanmar’s land borders are closed, and furthermore this changes very quickly. So we ended up in Bangkok, considering Thailand’s capital the only gateway to Myanmar. But even in the city where everything can normally be organised for you, they knew painfully little and told us that the only way to enter Myanmar was from Bangkok by plane and that you were obliged ... read more

Our flight from Thailand was just over an hour and we passed over jungle, valleys filled with rice paddies, mountains and specular rivers before banking over the mouth of the Irrawaddy River and landing at Yangon (Rangoon) Airport. The country is controlled by a military junta so we were uncertain of what to expect, passing through immigration and customs was a slow process I paid a small bribe to avoid purchasing the mandatory 300USD, it seemed a good idea at the time but later I would regret this action. We took a taxi with a guy named Aung who took us on a city tour and helped us arrange bus tickets to Mandalay. The magnificent 99 metre Shwedagon Zedi Daw or Dragon Pagoda as it is also known was our first stop. The pagoda is said ... read more
