thanks for the comments, ma! save me LOTS of hot chilis! can't wait for your cooking! We had all bought longyis by this point, and we actually wore them to the airport the next day (we were running out of clean clothes anyways). the boys were hilarious, brian wore the longyi as though he's been wearing skirts his entire life but tom just couldn't really get used to it...in fact, he couldn't bring himself to NOT wear a full pair of shorts underneath the longyi, which is where he kept his wallet...so everytime he needed money, etc, he'd pull the skirt ALL the way up and reach in his pockets, it was definitely one of the funniest things ever to watch the locals react to that. The security at the airport was tighter today - no, ... read more

*Many of the photos in this blog entry were taken by Jeff Roberts at www.eyeballimaging.com/blog ©2007* On July 11th Jeff and I left Bangkok's modern fast-paced bustle for the leisurely, traditional world of Myanmar (Burma). We flew into Yangon airport, then went to the domestic counter to see if we could find a flight that day to Mandalay or Bagan. We want to see Yangon, but we'll be heading back through there on our way back to Bangkok on August 3rd, so we decided we'd hurry north right away, if possible. We were in luck, and we were able to get seats on a small plane flying to Mandalay at 11 a.m. As we descended over Mandalay, we were stunned by the beauty of Myanmar's countryside... The land is a patchwork quilt of different colored farmlands, ... read more

ship me somewhwere's east of suez where the best is like the worst where there 'aint no Ten Commandments and a man can raise a thirst For the temple bells are callin' and it's here that I would be by the old Mountain Pagoda looking lazy at the sea. I couldn't help hum Kipling's poem as another cramped bus ride carried me over the bridge into Burma's second biggest city- the romanticism wasn't lost, but I was simply happy to have found a warm breeze. The wind blows constant, filling the plain of the city w/ dust. These gusts are much welcome to my continuously sweat-soaked t-shirt. bus station chaos abounds as I step off, of course downtown is still 11k's further down the road but i don't mind, I've stopped sweating. the only tourists ... read more

If this is the Mandalay made famous by the Las Vegas elite at the Mandalay Bay, then somebody in the marketing department either needs a big raise or should transfer to Disneyland's creative innovations department. First off, Mandalay doesn't have a bay. It is on a river and a lake, but there is no bay. And while it is one of the coolest places I've been, it definitely lacks...how would you say it... the five star ambiance boasted at the Vegas counterpart. After surviving the bus (barely), we easily hopped on a taxi/truck/go-cart type vehicle and headed to the Royal Guest House where we were to stay while in Mandalay. The accommodations were really nice for only $12 USD per night. Chris and I aren't too picky but do require clean beds and an in-room shower/toilet. ... read more

A 45 minute minute plane ride was all in took to transport us from one of SE Asia's most modern cities, Bangkok, to one stuck firmly in 1965. Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, was straight out fascinating the moment we landed! Maybe it was the face painted customs ladies, maybe it was the drive to town in a 40 year old rusty Mazda taxi, or maybe it was the bald female monks walking unassumingly along the pot-holed streets. Whatever it was, we knew right from Myanmar was gonna be a trip... We started off by blowing our budget on a 3 star hotel simply because the cheap hotels were without power (a theme that would continue for our entire stay in Myanmar) and aircon feels damn nice when its 40 degrees outside. But even these guys ... read more

Its the water festival, celebrating Myanmar's new year, and we're shielding ourselves from buckets of ice water to no avail. On the train we're sitting ducks at the mercy of hoards of kids ambushing you from either side with water. We try to close the metal grate on the windows but the older, more experienced kids pry open the shades from the outside using a bamboo pole while the younger kids laugh and scream while throwing water with all their might. I've given up, accepted that I will be wet and cold for the entire 12 hour journey. Jarrod, on the other hand, tries to be proactive and waits near the door where two cars join - where the kids have to balance their buckets and climb over to reach the other side - and ... read more

·Well hello there.. As you may have noticed laziness coupled with sometimes zero internet access has lead to the infrequent updating of my blog (mostly laziness) so here's my apology and forward we go :) Well the winds of travel have blown me over to Myanmar (formerly Burma) to which I had not originally intended to visit. But something inside told me too go and a good friend always said listen to the voices… there your only friends. This was my second attempt to visit Burma, the first one failed as I didn’t have enough money or the correct visa. There’s a double edging when planning to visit here. On one hand it’s good for the people who are extremely poor at a national average earning of roughly $3 a day. The other side of coarse ... read more
