Dag 15: rijden!

Ook hier moeten we zelf ... read more

Have you ever a picture postcard in person? I am sure a lot many of you have.I hope you remember the feeling when you landed on the postcard land for the first time. That was my feeling on 9th June 2019 when our Airbus 319 landed with a rather jolt on the small airfield of Paro, the only airport of the Kingdom of Bhutan. My first experience of Bhutan was the striking Silence of the place. As if by magic we have reached a land of silence. The Airport was very small and the immigration process was done very fast. We were greeted by our Guide and Driver duo of Bishnu and Ram outside, both looking very smart in their similar national dresses. The drive from Paro to Thimphu took us 1 hour and half but it ... read more

Paro eventually reopened for business and we returned there on lovely country roads where we could appreciate the scenery and local way of life, which included terraced farming on the hilly landscapes. We stopped on the way at Friendship Bridge, a joint venture between Bhutan and India. It had been built at the confluence of three rivers and the waters looked lovely and clean, sparkling in the sunlight, though it was certainly fresh and I had to wear the only suitable jacket I had with me for the low temperatures and I was heartily sick of seeing it by now. While we were there Ransinga suddenly whipped his cap off at a passing car. He could tell it was a Royal Family car by the number plate, he said, and he wanted to show respect. He ... read more

I want to live in Bhutan. I want to live in Bhutan and marry the king. I want to live in Bhutan, marry the king and have his chil ... well, maybe not that much but oh my goodness what a lovely country. We flew on Royal Bhutan Airlines, also known as Drukair. I thought that was a bit too close to Drugair or Drunkair for comfort but I later learned that a druk is a dragon, a wingless dragon I grant you and I would quite like my plane to have wings, but it flew us safely past Mt Everest again (is it that one?!), swerved around the mountains at the airport quite expertly, and got us safely on the ground despite that. The clocks only changed by -15 minutes and we three couples were ... read more

I dragged myself out of bed at 15 minutes past midnight grabbed my suitcase and headed downstairs to the cab rank, 20 minutes later I was in the queue to check in, for some reason I couldn't do it online. There were hundreds of people lined up and after standing in that line for almost an hour I was becoming a tad concerned, then I heard Kathmandu yelled out I made my way past all the other cattle to the check in counter, ten minutes after that I had exchanged money and was patiently waiting at gate six. Half an hour later I was on the bus to the plane, row two aisle seat is my preference and I settled in to watch a few episodes of the Vampire Diaries. I arrived in Kathmandu for the ... read more

The domain of Bhutan continues to be an unexploited jewel of the Himalayas. Since the kingdom was closed for foreign tourists till 1970, Bhutan has managed to preserve astonishing old-style Buddhist culture exceptionally combined with up-to-date sensibilities. From our five-day journey (which was far too less a time to explore this beautiful place completely) here are the highlights of the trip - Day 1 After arriving in Kathmandu airport, we were met by our local tour guide representatives, a company which we had found on the internet. We were driven to our hotel in a private car. The route from the airport to the hotel was so peaceful and beautiful, we knew what to expect. After relaxing for some hours in the hotel, our local guide showed up in the evening. He showed us around the ... read more

Saturday morning dawned rainy and chilly in Paro, Bhutan. The forecast had been for temps only in the low 40s; accompanied with rain it could be a bit uncomfortable, not to mention encountering potentially muddy and slippery trails, for our group's trek to Tiger's Nest, the cultural icon of Bhutan. It had poured last night, so the always pleasant and pleasing Bhutanese said we'd have no rain today as it had already washed itself out. I hoped the weather agreed with their optimistic outlooks, but took a rain jacket with me anyway. Waking at 5AM, dressing in layers, dry-bagging everything I wanted to carry, I went outside and found it was not too cold, but a misty rain was still falling and heavy fog covered the hillsides and mountains. Even so, we boarded the van and ... read more

It seems that almost everyone wants to or already enjoys river rafting. I like to canoe, kneeling securely on the bottom of the canoe, knees touching the sides for excellent stability. I learned the finer points of canoeing at summer camp when I was in my early teen years. Kayaking runs a definite distant second place, but I have sweet memories of holding my first grandson, nine moths old, while my son, the baby's father, paddled us in his ocean-going kayak on the South China Sea in Japan. And, from years later, I have another kayak memory of trying to hold another grandson while my son paddled us on the Potomac River out to Roosevelt Island. But I have never tried river rafting before today. We had perfect weather again this morning, a little chilly at ... read more

We have been so busy on this trip that there's hardly any time to write. This has been our second full day in Bhutan, first exploring the delights of Thimphu, and today travelling to Bhutan's former capital of Punakha. On our first full day here, yesterday, we visited the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory, the National Textile Museum, the Traditional Medicine (herbal) Clinic, the Arts and Crafts School, and Tashicho Dzong, an historic fortress and monastery. We also stopped at the Takin Preserve, takins being Bhutan's national animal, a heavier and more solid form of antelope. Added to all that, we had a dinner date with a Bhutanese family in their home, and were treated to a cultural performance beforehand, enjoying Bhutanese singing and dancing sitting in the cold Thimphu night air. Our days seem to be ... read more
