Bhutanese National Dress for a woman - the Kira!
Okay, so this entry might seem slightly boring to some people.... but this is the voluntary work which we have found ourselves engaged in.

Andy: I'm working for the Minisitry of Works and Human Settlement. They have created a new division with the slightly cumbersome name of "Engineering Adaptation and Risk Reduction division". The purpose of the division is to lead Bhutan in using new construction technologies to both reduce the carbon footprint of construction in Bhutan, and to ensure that new buildings are earthquake proof (no-one told us about the earthquakes!)

I'm looking at new (or traditional) materials which could be used to make construction greener, and then seeing how the industry can be incentivised / lead into using these new technologies.

Mel: I've got two jobs...My main work is for the Bhutan Broadcasting Service putting together (and presenting) a series of programs looking at 'maths in the real world'. I'm taking parts of the secondary curriculum and making them into 30 minute tutorial type programs.... Oh, and to be on National TV (or in a school) I have to wear National Dress..... called a Kira! Having never made TV programs before it is a huge learning curve but i'm picking up knowledge on editing and producing and it's actually really fun! Standing in the blazing sunshine trying to film, surrounded by sound crew and camera men is a surreal sensation!

My other job is just starting out at the moment and is developing but I am helping out in a startup school! I am learning to convert my secondary maths skills as the school ranges from age 2 up to age 6..... Brilliant - and the kids are soooo cute!!!!
