This is my second year living in Dhaka and I have certainly settled into a routine here, but the city still surprises me. I have learned not to take anything for granted. I was away for two months this summer, but now after a couple weeks of getting back into life and work here, I went out on a little trip around the city. At the next village we stopped in I found an eves-dropping goat listening in on the neighbors.

Our next excursion was out to the Buriganga River to find a boat to play on. Buriganga means "Old Ganges" and is the main river flowing through Dhaka.

I really like beards but I will never understand the appeal of henna in a white beard.

The ferry landing was busy but we finally got a boat to paddle us up the river a ways.

The river was full of islands and side channels. This island had several groups setting off for a late afternoon picnic.

The husband of one of my colleagues wanted to try paddling the boat, which the real boatman (with the hat) thought was pretty funny. (I still feel compelled to put a pic of myself on the blog, as if to prove that I really did take all these other photos.)

Since it was an outing for teachers, we spent the day in our big red school bus. When we got off the river it was waiting to take us back to Dhaka.
