Well, it’s been exactly a week since I’ve arrived in Yerevan and I can say I’m lucky enough to feel very welcome here. Perhaps for the simple fact that I feel at home with my host family and have reunited with some relatives I do not feel as though I’m in a foreign city, but that I belong and fit in as I should. Although, everything about this city is foreign for the simple fact that I haven’t been here in 20 years and don’t speak the language. Not understanding what people are saying around me is frustrating and makes me feel like the outsider that I am. For some reason I am emotionally withdrawn from my usual reactions/feelings when I travel. I typically feel inspired, motivated and super excited. However, this week I have felt ... read more

12 hours of sleep and I was beginning to feel human again. I no longer had the feeling that my head would explode. A late start with a leisurely breakfast at 9am was just what was called for. The Berlin hotel is a really peaceful hotel with nice outside areas to sit in and friendly staff. First visit of the day was to Jrapi Caravanserai. It is not complete like the one at Selim but somehow, seeing the ruin helped us to see how the place was constructed -bit like those models biology teachers use. We could see where the animals slept and even holes drilled into the stone where they could be tethered. There was also an interesting church close to the Caravanserai which has been rebuilt using tree trunks as supporting pillars instead of ... read more

Our flight to Yerevan arrived on time, passport control was pretty smooth. I'm glad we decided to get our visas before leaving the UK otherwise we would have had to queue twice - three times if we had to change money. It was great seeing Saro's friendly face in the arrivals lounge. Although it was 12.30 GMT when we arrived it was 3.30am in Yerevan. We then had a 2 hour drive to our first destination - Gyumri. We got to Hotel Berlin but the gates were locked. Our hearts sank as none of us had any sleep. Luckily someone saw us and let us in - it turned out to be Grigor - the father of the family my niece Fi was living with up until about week ago. We are about to have breakfast ... read more

After breakfast we went for a walk while our rooms were being prepared. We were a bit lacklustre due to no sleep but the Armenian coffee had helped to get us in gear. Gyumri was badly damaged during the earthquake of 1988 mainly due to shoddy Soviet high rise buildings. It's been a long time but the city is getting itself together with financial support from the diaspora. Back at the hotel, having a shower made me start to feel human again and after a short nap we regrouped, had lunch and then went to visit Mother Armenia, a giant statue at the top of ridge with great views of the city. We have been invited to Grigor's home so will be going there this evening. In between time I'm trying to keep awake as I ... read more

Asia » Armenia » West » Mount Aragats August 2nd 2012

Tuesday I attempted to summit Mt. Aragats, the highest mountain in Armenia with an elevation of 4090 meters. I could only make it to the false summit at 4035 meters because of the clouds that rolled in just as I reached the summit block making the challenging route finding even more difficult. However, I subsequently met some Russians on the descent who read that it is not possible to reach the true summit without rock climbing gear so I may have in fact made it to the highest trekking point. My first five days in Armenia were sunny and insanely hot but as soon as I got to Kari Lich last Sunday (the lake at the start of the trek) the clouds began to appear and I had to wait an extra day before attempting Aragats. ... read more

Tatev Monastery is in Southern Armenia, a small area wedged in among Iran, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. The Wings of Tatev® is the longest single line aerial tramway in the world. It is 5.7 kilometers long and takes approximately 11 minutes to cross the Vorotan River Gorge to the monastery and village of the same name. Over the gorge, the tram is a maximum height of 320 meters above the ground. Very cool but definitely not for the agoraphobic. Tomorrow I am heading to Byurakan close to Mount Aragats (just over 4000 meters but not at all technical) which I will attempt to summit Monday morning. $US ≈ 411 Armenian dram Yerevan Accommodation and food Initially took my own room sans toilette at Theatre Hostel just south of Republic Square. I booked on hostelbookers.com for ~$18 for ... read more

Yerevan Yerevan I liked. Any city with a suburb called Massive Norks gets my vote. Buildings were a mix of Soviet grandeur, huge squares, like Opera Square, and Parisian looking tenements, all railings and roof gardens. Being March, and Armenia being south of Carlisle, I had expected balmy spring evenings but it was decidely parky, snow on the ground and a fierce wind blasting straight through us. Unfortunately, the heavy cloud meant there was to be no sighting of Mount Ararat, Armenia's spiritual home, now in Turkey. We were also to miss pretty much all of Yerevan's main sights, the Genocide Memorial, museums, as it was too cold and snowing too much to wander around outside. img=http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_h-6iHwbVZI/T619rHljeTI/AAAAAAAAARc/-RnCNYn4L24/s320/DSC05850... read more

Geo: 40.7471, 44.8726I've written all this once before, saving it as a draft email in the absence of wifi to send it and in trying to copy and paste it managed to delete it all.. So when last we spoke I had arrived in the pleasant hotel in Goris, yummy honey at breakfast, and been to see the Tatev monastery without being able to take the cable car.. Next day, Saturday, we headed back North with a first stop at the Armenian Stonehenge, as they call it. Well stonehenge it isn't but it is an impressive collection of standing stones in an oval with intersecting arc and other standing stones some with holes in the top which they claim means it was a prehistoric observatory, some armenian professor has even done a study and written a ... read more

Geo: 39.5023, 46.3364So today we headed way down south in the country, passing close to the borders with Turkey (closed), Azerbaijan (closed) and in the direction of Iran (border open and judging by number of iranian trucks probably a bit of sanction busting going on. Visited three monasteries, all interesting in their own way but made special by location, all close to or in mountain countries with snow capped peaks by the dozen.Khor Virap monastery, famous because Gregory the Illuminator - who brought Christianity to Armenia, was imprisoned In a dungeon on the site for 13 years before healing the Kings son which persuaded the king that Christianity might be a good thing..
