Honestly you can't find many overweight or unattractive people in Paris... walking down the Champs Elysee in our travelling clothes, we felt quite out of place (well I know I did)!! Everyone looked so well groomed, in their best designer gear, with beautifully made up faces (the guys included I'm sure) and oh so sexy shoes!! I was gobsmacked.. not only because of these ridiculously good looking people, but the actual city too and surprisingly the friendly people... I know people say Parisians are snobby etc, we found they were quite friendly.. big thanks to Neena for that, she speaks great French and of course 5 girls travelling together makes a HUGE difference... especially at restaurants, best service... the waiters even serenaded Melissa with a song called............. wait for it................ "Melissa"!!!... read more

Hello everyone Hope you are all doing well. We´ve been in Brazil for a week now and thought we´d update our blog to let you all know what we´ve been up to. We arrived in Rio de Janiero last Tuesday 2 hours later than scheduled as our flight was diverted to Rio rather than landing at Sao Paulo before heading on to Rio. This mean´t that we had to stay on the plane from Rio to Sao Paulo before heading back to Sao Paulo. Confusing? Yes. Crazy? Absolutely! What a nightmare!! In Rio we´ve been to the 'Corcovado´ (the statue of Christ that overlooks the entire city) which was amzing. We´ve also been to Sugar Loaf Mountain, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and the Maracana national football stadium (had to be done!). We also did a 'favela´tour ... read more

Welcome back to my little world ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. You will be pleased to know that I have emerged from the correct end of a small bout of depression during which time I had my man flu and felt like I just couldn’t walk. Anyway, things are looking up a great deal now and since my last update no end of cool, fun events have been happening here. It’s a wonder any work gets under way with all these end of season frivolities taking place around base. First of all, I must add that the season is slowly coming to a close now and people are wrapping up their science kit and getting ready for the 10’000 mile journey home. For the rest of us however, life goes on and our first big ... read more

Hello again everyone, March already, where is the time going, well things are picking up down here, busy, busy and the work is still here also. Rothera base has a well-established football team, this being the BAS (boys and girls), who challenge anyone on base to a game, very competitive bunch I must say. Well because the Morrisons builders, which have around 21 people on site, obviously the BAS team wanted a match to show their supremacy, Aimo (site project manager), asked for volunteers from the site to play a match with BAS, on the 26th of February, giving us a whole week to prepare and get a team together, wow, not all want to play football, and we did struggle to raise the 11 men required!! But came the big day and it was very ... read more

Looking forward to this for ages and it defo didnt disappoint. Iguzu falls are the biggest in the world and share there border with Argentina , Brazil and Paraguay(although you cant view it from this side cos its run by smugglers and gangsters!!) We got to our hostel early which was recommended by everyone and even boasts a pool. Unfortunately the staff were complete morons(everyone at the hostel agreed so where its gets is reputation from i dont know???). We took about 2 hours to check i.e hand 30 pesos over and get bed sheets. And the English lads from BA took about 7 hours(no lie!!) so we were lucky. I know its only a hostel and im bitching about everything but Argentina is brilliant and the people are amazing, its always the few assholes!! Ok ... read more

We went to bed early and awoke around 6AM one mile off shore. The seas were choppy in the 20 knot winds. With binoculars we could see a few national flags blowing horizontal on shore by the square huts and storage containers piled helter skelter on the rocky beach. After a quick breakfast we put on most of our race clothes then over that put our waterproof boating jackets and pants, kneehigh boots, heavy gloves, hoods. We got out on deck in 32 degree weather and climbed down the gangway to water level where we loaded into zodiacs, sitting on rubber pontoons at water level with twelve of our mates for the mile outboard motor ride into shore as waves were breaking over us. The zodiacs get water inside so our feet were in 3” of ... read more

Hello again, just let me start by mentioning i have only done one days work and that i feel shattered, sure i will get used to it soon. Hopefully i will be getting fitter, playing football, circuit training and walking around the base and looking at wildlife! Hello friends and country people, sorry have not been on the travelblog for a few weeks, have been hit by a virul influenza, which has kept me off work and too knackered to do anything. Getting dark now and even colder, but every night i see some amazing night skies and in the day really cool clouds as on the picture attached. it is an amazing place to work and i am indeed a fortunate person to be here, work is work, but you do not get many chances ... read more

Hello again one and all. First of all, I must apologise for not updating the websites for quite some time, mainly to me mum who’s been most worried that aliens might of abducted me while scoping out the continent for their water shortage needs. (Did you know Antarctica holds 90% of the worlds ice? Now that’s a lot of water my friend) Anyway, the main reason for my lack of info is basically Princess Anne’s fault. Well, someone in her entourage anyway. When her party of people flew into base they managed to smuggle in a few strains of what can only be described as a God-awful form of man flu. Now, im generally not one for being very ill while back in the real world, yet the trouble with working out here in such a ... read more

Wow. What a trip. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to go to Antarctica, I just recommend you do it. It has been the most amazing time. Everything is bigger, better and brighter than I ever imagined. A truly awesome experience being surrounded by ice and mountains that served to remind me of just how small I am in the big wide world. Internet time is limited so I´m just going to go ahead and list my Top 5 experiences. 1 Having a humpback whale swim under me when I was out kayaking by myself 2 Watching a leopard seal hunt a crabeater seal (admittedly I did have my eyes shut for a bit of it as I was a bit scared for the poor crabeater seal, he got away thankfully...) 3 ... read more

This week has been absolutely mental in all respects of the word out here on the lovely Island of Adelaide. As I mentioned in a few of my previous updates, HRH The Princess Royal, or Annie to me now, arrived for 3 days of fun and games around the peninsular along with her husband Admiral Lawrence and a few other VVIPs including the Director of British Antarctic Survey, Prof Chris Rapley. Annie also brought along her personal security guard to ward off unwarranted Adele Penguins or Leopard Seal attacks while she underwent her stroll around the peninsular. As ever, the Morrison’s team here carried on, regardless of the fact the entourage where passing by the worksite on another jolly, just as someone screamed “Oh for f***s sake!!!” as another job went a bit tits up. Welcome ... read more
