01 Boabab
A tall, large boabab tree. Geo: -16.8703, 28.5864
Today was another lazy, relaxing day. I started with a sleep-in while the guys went fishing. We then had toasted jaffles (onion, tomato and cheese) for brunch – which were delicious. As it was quite warm, it didn't matter that the water in the shower wasn't hot. So I enjoyed a nice long cool shower and then had a nap in my chair under the shade of the tree. Today I wore sunscreen, as I got a bit pink yesterday.
At 2pm we all went for a drive to another part of the lake for some fishing. The drive was only about 15 minutes long. During the drive we stopped to take pictures of various baobab trees.
We stopped behind one of the bushcamps on the shore of the lake. We spent a few hours here. The scenery here was also beautiful. We saw and heard a few houseboats go past us.
There was a large pod of hippos floating in the water about 100 metres from the shore. It was hard to know how many there were, as they are continuously bobbing their heads in and out of the water. Francois then caught a tiger fish, which Paul

Another unique boabab tree. brought over to me in the hope of giving me a fright. The poor fish looked evil with lots of small spiky teeth, but tiger fish are what the guys came to Zimbabwe to catch.
I sat on a rock and put my feet in the water as I took in the scenery and read my magazine. The water here was so clear and if it wasn't for the crocodiles and hippos, I would have loved to go for a swim to cool down. Further along the shore there were a pair of fish eagles and then a large croc swam by.
At about 4pm we decided to do a short game drive along the Rhino Loop, which is a 10km game drive according to the map. The track was very rough and could not be done without a 4x4. We saw impalas, warthogs, some type of coucal bird – which was a lifer for Paul, a small breeding herd of elephants, the behind of an elephant and the sound of more elephants in the bushes.
The track was taking us longer than it should have and were starting to worry as the sun was setting and driving after sunset

A view of the beautiful Lake Kariba. was forbidden - we also did not want to be mistaken for rhino poachers. The track was not signposted, so we thought it was best to turn around. We got back to camp at 7pm, just in time. This evening we were not the only people in camp, there were two other small groups.
After dinner as we sat around, Francois and I noticed a large shape very close by. We used our head torches to see what it was, but they did not produce enough light. So we turned on the car head lights and saw that it was a hippo and less than 30 metres away. It was happily eating grass and luckily was not interested in coming closer to us. During the night, once again the hippos were very noisy.
