Great Zimbabwe was the largest sub-Saharan establishment from the 11th century to the 15th century. The factors suggest a population between 11,000 up to 20,000. This giant stone city was constructed without any mortar reminiscent of places like Machu Picchu. Eventually depleting resources and growing numbers saw the city’s inhabitants move on to another location. Also, one theory suggests that the king decided to move everyone to attack some Swahili traders on the coast. Either way, it got abandoned and forgotten through time. Pretty cool stuff. I like seeing the really old things humans did around the world and I am happy to say I have seen quite a few ancient places. Camping by myself again seems to be a constant theme, but at least one thing is for sure. I am getting lucky on finding ... read more

Dear All Greetings from Zimbabwe! Wow, I actually made it – to be honest, I had a few doubts about whether I’d be able to get a visa across the border, but that was really easy, the border guard very welcoming, and this really is such a fantastic country! Although most sources said so before I arrived, it’s something you really have to see with your own eyes to believe – Zimbabwe is safe, welcoming and stunning! I’m glad I’m exploring it now, I feel like some kind of pioneer, as I’m sure in a few years this place will be just teeming with tourists again. Last I wrote I was back in the dump of a city, Tete – stayed there one more night. As expected, not much to report from that dire town (did ... read more

Geo: -20.239, 30.9952The great Zimbabwe monument is an ancient city given world heritage status. Well you would have thought such an important attraction would have been signposted. We assumed so also but found ourselves lost again. We had to ask four times for instructions before finally finding the ruins.Well worth the effort check out the photo's.. Lisa summed it up when we were trying to figure out why it was build so elaborate.. somebody long ago had too much time on their hands.. Jimmy you would love it so many boulders with so much potential. When heading to the monument look for the sign that looks like it is advertising a lodge!! Signage in Zim is obviously low priority as they try to sort out the country.. We have been lost almost every day. There is ... read more

… first half of email lost … Cape Point at the southern tip of the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Aghulas (at the southernmost tip of Africa) were the geographical highlights. We hadn’t made any real plans for New Year’s and we were very fortunate to meet some folks on the beach who were having a New Year’s Eve party at their beach house only a few metres away. New Year’s Eve here is pretty much like it is anywhere else in the world with lots of drinking, hugging, kissing and well-wishing … except we were all at the beach wearing shorts and a t-shirt!!! We both managed to get a nice sunburn during the day (Ann’s very first sunburn ever … I was proud to be a part of it) and spent the next ... read more
