Once the sun came up, I looked out the window. Below was the barren-looking land you expect to see when you think of Africa. Knowing that it was still some time before we would land, and feeling that sleeping was probably impossible at this point, I decided to watch a movie…the selection on this flight was not as good as the one from LAX - LHR, but it was something to kill the boredom that was settling in after almost 30 hours of traveling. Breakfast was not as exciting as either dinner had been, but it was something and since my body didn’t really know what day or time it was supposed to functioning on, it didn’t really matter. After breakfast was taken away, I decided to look out the window again. The land below me ... read more

I arrived in London safely. My next flight leaves in a few hours for Dubai. The security here was crazy....it took one hour to get through...mostly because people do not listen. Posted everywhere are the liquid and gel rules as well as a one bag rule. One bag seems clear to me though one lady insisted some chas should allow her 7 bags! Women were arguing that purses are not bags...it was quite chaotic. The flight was good....bumpy but good. I am going to browse around here...update you in Dubai. Tasha... read more

As the plane began descending, I was looking out the window at the quaint houses and I noticed the road…and this very thought occurred to me: “Oh my gosh, they really do drive on the other side of the road!” Not that I didn’t believe it, but it became clear to me that I really was about to land in England! The landing was smooth and soon I was off the plane and heading toward customs. Since I had nothing to declare and I was only there for a short time (what they refer to as “transit”) my customs experience went smoothly; I had a nice chat w/the customs guy and I was through the door…I WAS IN LONDON!!! The first order of business was to call home, so I made my way to a phone. ... read more

My day started 3 hours later than I intended for it to begin! I set the alarm so I could take a brief nap (at 3:30AM) and while I should have gotten up when my alarm went off the first time @ 4:30, my body had other needs and so I set the alarm to go off one hour later…and the next time I opened my eyes it was 8:00am!!! Now, if I had made better use of my time in the weeks leading up to this day this would not have been a problem. I, however, am a procrastinator and for all of you who know me well can stop shaking your head at me…I still managed to get everything done before my flight took off, I just didn’t have time to pack as carefully ... read more

Well my time in Uganda (about 9 weeks) and Africa has finally come to an end :(, and I have to say that it has been one of the best experiences in my life. I'll never forget my time with the kin kids, and hopefully one day I will make it back there. If I were at a different point in my life, and if I could make money doing it, I doubt I would have left. However if ever you want to know my new opinion on foreign aid buy me a couple drinks one night and get ready for a rant. It's not all bad, but well....like I said a couple drinks first. While I was sad to go, I was excited for the re-union to happen in Thailand. In preparation for the much ... read more

My quest to get the kids drinking water without any sweetener added is well underway and I even managed to coax one of the boys into going a whole week without sweety water. As a reward for his efforts I took him into Kampala for chicken and chips, which of course is a huge deal. Joseph, the boy who I took is such a sweet kid who explained to me that when he grows up he wants to help the numerous homeless people lining the streets of Kampala. As an initial gesture he asked me if he could save his fries for one of the people on the street. Being the sinic that I am now, I expected the person receiving the food to be ungrateful, but to my surprise the lady actually thanked Joseph for ... read more

It seems odd to me writing about life here in Uganda now that it has become almost routine (more on that later). I see the same faces day in and out, and I get the same cries of Mzungu almost anywhere I go. My clothes are permanently covered in the red dust otherwise known as the roads outside of Kampala. I have hit or been hit countless times now on my boda rides in the city, and have just come to think of it as routine at this point. As a white person living in a village outside kampala, and even in certain areas of kampala, I have begun to think of myself as quite important. One cannot walk very far without having someone shout out Mzungu Bye, or Mzungu How are you? Especially with kids. ... read more

My last few weeks in Uganda were relatively uneventful. I spent most of my time the same as I spent the previous two months, working, reading, going to gym, watching movies, etc… The difference between this routine and having the same general routine in the States is in the details. I had been meaning to write about some issues that I faced while in Kampala and am going to touch on them in this entry as it is my last that will be specifically and only dedicated to Uganda. This is going to sound as if I am only complaining about issues living there, which is not accurate- I had an amazing time. It’s just that living in NYC for the past two years and before always having a car at my disposal I was completely ... read more
